Consolidated list of essay requirements by colleges

Essays and college application - Consolidated list of essay requirements by colleges

Will be very thankful to you all if you could help me with the following

I want a consolidated list/type/number of essays by college to plan in advance. Something similar to the below format would be so useful

College name Number of essays typically needed Size of the essays (number of words) Topics (I know it changes every year, but may be last year's examples or so) Supplement essays other than common app essay

Do I need to create an account to see the above requirements in each college? Is there a repository where I can go and refer to the above? I am typically looking for Ivies, MIT, Berkeley, Caltech, Carnegie Mellon, Georgia tech, etc.

Thanks so much.

Appreciate your kind help please.

Thanks

This would be an extremely useful thread if people who had done essays for particular schools would respond, but my experience is that once essays are done, the stress-relief is so great, they’ll never look at this part of CC again. LOL.

PARENTS, on the other hand, love this kind of information and might contribute. Try re-posting something similar (couching it in “parent-terms” like, “what kinds of essays did your kids have to respond to for various colleges?”) and you might get more responses.

I would create an account on the Common App website, and then add some schools to your list. That allows you to see their applications, including their supplements. IMHO, that would be much easier than scrolling through a long list of posts, and it would be quicker than looking at the individual college websites.

Well, I can start off by giving a list of the essays required by the colleges I applied to:

Union College
Why Union/how did you learn about Union - paragraph

Mount Holyoke College
short answer - three options, including Why Mt. Holyoke - 1-2 paragraphs
writing sample - graded paper

Vassar College

Why Vassar/how did you learn about Vassar - a short paragraph (submission of longer text optional)
My Space (optional) - space for creative works; may be anything, including an essay

Sewanee: The University of the South
Why Sewanee - paragraph

Reed College
Why Reed - essay
writing sample - graded paper (US residents only)

Whitman College
short answer - topic: diversity (may change in future years) - 1-2 paragraphs
writing sample - graded paper OR review of a book of your choice
Why Whitman - 1-2 paragraphs (optional)

University of Chicago
supplement - topics change every year - essay
Why Chicago - a couple of paragraphs
list of favorite things - a couple of paragraphs (optional)

St. John’s College
how did you learn about St. John’s - paragraph
space for your questions - paragraph (optional, I think)
Why St. John’s/evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of your education to date - essay
two separate questions about your reading habits - essay

Um, people, feel free to add your own. I think this topic may become a very useful resource if we can find a way to systematize the answers/make a consolidated list somewhere.
