What is scope of this field? Are there a lot of jobs to be had? It just seems like a combo of civil engineering and management.

Construction and Management are the two majors that Engineers whos cant hack it flock to

Nah that would be AgE, Agricultural Engineering.

If only my school had it...there'd be plenty of people switching in every year

I'm finishing up my bachelor's degree in civil engineering right now and am applying to grad school with an intent on concentrating in construction management. Typically, these programs are embedded within the civil engineering department. Are there lots of job? Definitely, at least where I'm at, but that's probably not representative of the entire country. Pays quite well too.

In the profession, some are estimators. Some are construction manager/superintendents. Estimators are heavily involved in the project bidding process. Basically, you prepare a cost estimate for a proposal and submit it to the owner in the hopes that you have the lowest bid and win the contract. The construction manager's job is to make sure the project is completed safely, on time, and on budget, which is no easy feat. You really need to have both good technical skills and good managerial skills.

It's a good field if you like to be out in the field and not stuck in the office all the time.
