I’m a high school senior and since I’ve visited Cornell and I’ve been absolutely in love. I am interested in a career and finance but have anecdotally heard that it is much harder to get an IB/consulting job if someone is an econ major in CAS versus having to be an AEM major. How true is this and do recruiters still hire kids from CAS or is it much more difficult?
I don’t think it is true. My kid was a math/econ major and she received multiple IB offers. Her friends from Hotel and CoE also received offers. CAS is very well regarded, courses are probably more rigorous than AEM. IBs also love engineers - analytical, good problem solver.
Based on how courses are taught within each school. My daughter always knew she was going into IB. My advice to her was to get a liberal arts education - double major in math and econ rather than getting a business degree. If she wanted a business degree then she could get a MBA.
It honestly does not matter what major you are. You can easily get recruitment from any school within Cornell as long as you join the right clubs and do the business minor. Plenty of Hotel School students also go into IB/Consulting.
@spemmar1 My daughter is in Cornell now. She recently told me that AEM is by far the hardest major to get into, but once in, it’s the easiest major. She says that her friends there have almost no work.
Recruiting for IB is very strong throughout all the schools at Cornell. Keep your GPA high and major/minor in math, physics, business, engineering, or econ and you will get interviews.
