Contact Lenses

Ive worn glasses all my life but I feel like wearing contacts will improve my physical looks. My proble, however is that I have a hard time dealing with touching my eyes..i get really scared and defensive.

are contacts worth getting and how can i deal with my problem?

Everyone has a hard time putting contact lenses in at first. When I first got contacts about ten years ago, I got used to putting them in and taking them out after about a week.

Usually the optometrist will put them in and take them out of your eyes the first time. Then he or she will make you try to put them. If you can’t do it, they will usually give you some drops that kind of numb your eyes, so you don’t automatically blink when you go to put the lenses in.

It will be difficult for the first few days – there’s no getting around that. Once you get used to it, though, it’s a breeze. It should only take about a week.

I also had very sensitive eyes and was terrified of contacts, but after a week or so I was used to them.

Just agreeing with everyone else here. It’s weird and annoying for the first few days, and after that you’ll wonder how you ever lived without them. The first day I had them in, I found it kind of hard to focus my eyes (the room seemed a lot bigger and it was kind of disorienting, but I don’t know if that’s a common thing) and it was really hard to get them out. It gets a lot easier with practice, though.

If you have trouble with other people touching your eyes, the eyeglass store chain, “for eyes” (I think it is a national chain) has optometrists that coach you to put them in on your own. Some optometrists at other places insist on putting them in your eyes the first time…in my case, that just didn’t work, my blinking/flinching reflex took over. I was much more comfortable not having my doctor’s hairy knuckles anywhere near my eyes. It took a while but at “for eyes” they were really patient and I eventually got them in. It does get much easier each time you do it.
Good luck.

Agreeing with everyone else.

Also, realize that you need to be very serious about hygiene with contacts. Switch out the solution EVERY night. Wash your hands before you put 'em in and take 'em out.

If you’re not careful you can get bad eye infections and even go blind. No joke.

My experience was a bit different because I was only about 11 or 12 when I got contacts, and I have a lazy eye. So to make the eyes stronger I had to stagger my use…I could only wear them at intervals of 2 hours. So the first day I wore them for 2 hours, then 4, then 6, etc.

But once you get used to them, you won’t miss glasses. I’ve been wearing contacts for 8 years now and I’ve never once had a problem. Heck, I don’t think I even have an up-to-date pair of glasses right now as far as my prescription goes.

Oh, that’s another thing. I don’t know if this is true for everyone, but my prescription changes much more rapidly now that I’m on contacts. For the better. But again, your mileage may vary.

My doctor had me do things on my own from the start…emphasizing that this isn’t something mom or dad can or should help with. She coached me on how to pop the lenses in and out, and that was that.

She did have some trouble getting my lazy eye to adjust to the lens and straighten out, but eventually she figured it out and the rest, as they say, is history. :)

Contact lenses are easy peasy - you don’t have to touch your eyes at all. Just place the contact lens on your index finger, hold it up to your eye and it pops right in! After a few days it will be really natural, easy as buttoning up your shirt in the morning. The optometrist/opthamologist or whatever didn’t touch my eye at all. He had his assistant show me how to put them in.

Glasses suck compared to contact lenses:

 • they don’t give you 360 degree vision
 • it feels uncomfortable wearing them if you’re used to contacts
 • they can fall off or get damaged during sports
 • if you’re a chem or biochem major and wear goggles 4 days a week like me, glasses are annoying lol
 • Most people look better with a “natural” look instead of having plastic on their face

For whatever reason, my eyes stopped tolerating my contacts after over a year of wearing them…

…If I wear them for more than a few hours, my eyes get bloodshot and I inevitably get a headache…which sucks…

Because I hate wearing glasses.

As for getting used to contacts, it wasn’t hard for me at all. A few days to get your technique right for putting them in and it’s a breeze.

You should give them a try, I was the same way but once I actually tried to put them in I was fine.

I hated contacts anyway though, after years of glasses it just was not worth the hassle.

Yeah contacts are pretty easy to put in after a while. Don’t abuse them, meaning if you have to throw them away every 2 weeks, do it. I had the 30 night and day contacts which you could sleep in and wear for 30 days, I ended up wearing the same pair for six months when i was like 15 and now i’m just like rixs, after a few hours of wearing contacts my eyes get bloodshot and my eyes feel horrible.

I’ve worn contacts for 3 decades now and wouldn’t have it any other way. It is really mind over matter when sticking your finger and contact in your eye, millions do it every day. Some lenses are more confortable than others, I have found that the thinner the lens, the more comfy.

Daily wear might be a good idea for a young college person, just toss them at the end of the day and no soaking, then in the am, put in a new pair. They don’t get the build up that a longer wear lense can get, which makes them uncomfortable.

Good luck!

The hardest part is the first week or so. The first time I got contacts about a year ago, the Doctor didn’t let me leave until I could show him I could put them in, and take them out. The Doctor’s assistant sat there and waited until I got them in for over an hour. I was tearing like crazy, and all the sudden one poped in!

Try them out, and you’ll see that they are worth every cent.

Oh jeeze I could never wear contacts. I’d rather get LASIK.

I started wearing contacts in 7th grade, and I’m pretty sure it burned my eyes every morning. Looking back, I was surely doing something very wrong, because it should not be painful at all. I would absolutely recommend contacts today, as we have monthlies! If you have to sample any Air Optix contacts, be incredibly suspicious that it is a problem with the contacts if you happen to have any trouble. I wore the same brand of contacts for several years, then the brand was sold to a new company or something, and I wasted a lot of money on a 6-month supply of BAD contacts! Right now, I’m on the Air Optix “Aqua,” because my optometrist told me they were a different formula, and the sample contacts felt great. After ordering a 6-month supply? They give me trouble! It’s like the optometrists get high quality samples, and then when we go to order them, we get absolute garbage. I’ve seen a huuuuge thread of people all having the exact same problem as me.

Yeah, it’s easier after the first week. Just try looking away at first, look up, down, to the side, anywhere but your finger at first to put it in. Don’t blink right as it’s in, move your eye around a bit, then blink.

You get used to it quick. They’re real good.

I always look up and stick the contact to my eye underneath my iris and then blink until it moves into place. That way I don’t get that creepy FINGER MOVING TOWARD EYE OMG panic.

I wore contacts for a few years and now I wear glasses, contacts were such a hassle for me -.- and honestly I don’t think I look better without glasses…

^Ditto. I’ve worn glasses since I was three years old, I hate the way I look without them. I tried contacts in 5th grade and junior year of college and just could not get myself to like them enough to actually go through the trouble of taking care of them.
