Contingency admission?

Has anyone ever heard of this at UR? A friend at work today told me that since her son is a legacy she can ask for a contingency admission. He would be allowed to attend for one semester to see how he did, and if he was successful he would be allowed to stay.

His GPA is 2.9 and SATs 1300/2400 so he would not likely be admitted normally. ECs include some sports and he is a URM.

Thoughts?

Never heard of it but that doesn’t mean it exists. UR is not known for showing much leniency towards legacies, so this would surprise me if true.

Is he good enough for an athletic scholarship?

He is not being recruited anywhere so I doubt it. He hopes to be a walk on if he goes to a smaller school.

If he was scholarship, I was going to mention that he may be a special admit. The athletic department is given a few of these a year.

Please come back and share the final results of this, as I’m intrigued.

I’ll try to get back to you. The mom said today that he was applying for sure. I originally asked because I found it surprising. Someone else suggested to her that she call someone in admissions and ask if this info is true. I don’t think she plans to, but really thinks he will get in.

Spider05–I checked back with the co-worker and her son will not be applying to UR. He has been accepted to some hbc’s and will probably attend one of them. I guess we’ll never know for sure if this exists.

Thanks for the follow up on this. Definitely was looking forward to hearing more about this. Obviously wish him the best of luck during his collegiate years!
