Hi,
I’m becoming a senior soon, and ive been thinking whether i should continue volleyball this year. This year would be my 4th year and i have a good chance of becoming captain. However, i feel that ill have A LOT of stress this year since if i become a captain that i wont be able to focus on my studies and other activities. I know, continuity is important, but I literally cried and was emotionally weak last year becuz i had a tough time even tho i wasnt captain. My team is very lacking so it gives the captains extra work and time to get ready for competition.
Thing is, im not very good at the sport and i have rly bad back.
So should i continue?
If you enjoy playing, I would play. If you cut out extracurricular activities, you will be less motivated and efficient when it comes to doing homework. Unless you also have a lot of other time-consuming activities, or don’t enjoy volleyball, I would play
Would not playing affect my chances for college anyhow?
I can hit the fitness center anytime, so motivation wont be much of a big factor.
Before my senior year, I didn’t want to continue doing band or cross country. My mom understood, but told me that colleges would probably take pause if I quit BOTH activities, especially if my grades went down at all. I ended up doing cross country (and did horribly) for the fall and quitting band, which was a year-long commitment.
If you have other fairly significant extracurriculars, you can probably get away with quitting volleyball if you really don’t want to do it. Otherwise, you should probably stick with it. If you enjoy playing, I would stick with volleyball, even if you have to explain to your coach that you can’t be a team captain.
Since you are not a recruited athlete, sports are “just” another EC. 3 years vs. 4 years will make absolutely no difference.
That said, giving up the sport means giving up the captaincy which means giving up a leadership position. That can make a difference, unless you have another leadership position to take its place.
@skieurope i also have a good chance of becoming an official editor of my school’s literary magazine next year – would this account for it?
@chajen16 IMO, yes.
It also depends where you are going. I am going to Indiana University in the fall, and the school itself is not hard to get into. If you have decent stats, you will get in no matter what you have for extracurriculars.
