Long story short, I plan on applying to Northwestern U reg. decisions. I know they place a pretty big advantage on early applicants, but because of a scholarship program I was pursuing, I couldn’t apply to a binding decision anywhere. I emailed my admissions rep already, but I am afraid they might think it is just an excuse for no applying early. Is there anything else I can/should do to convey that it is my top choice school and I would more than likely attend if I am admitted?
If you are seeking financial aid, be careful of making any promises. The money may not come through or be as generous as you require. Also, don’t make promises to a college that you haven’t visited. If you can afford it either way, I see no problem with letting the school know they are your first choice, either through a call from your GC, an interview, or in your application. It may not make a difference (ED or EA is really the best way to make it count), but it won’t hurt your chances either.
Did you submit your RD application by the ED deadline? This also would give support to your argument. I definitely agree that sending an email to the admissions rep would be a good idea.
What was the reason you couldn’t apply early? Was it for financial aid reasons? If so be explicit about this in your email. The logical counter to this is that students can get out of ED if the financial aid is not enough. Make sure you have thought out how to address this in your email.
ED isn’t just about conveying that Northwestern is your top choice - it’s about saying you are committed to going there if admitted, which gives the school a higher yield rate. If something in your financial situation has changed and you could now say you are certain you would atten NU if admitted, then this is what you should convey. If this is not the case, I would email an admissions counselor and explain your situation and ask for advice on how you can show demonstrated interest despite financial concern. Also, do an interview if possible! This shows demonstrated interest, and it’s a great place to talk about how Northwestern is your top choice and why. Best of luck!
You seem to be assuming just applying ED is a special extra tip over everything else. In fact, your app and supps, LoRs, etc, need to spot on show your match. Show, not just tell. What they look for, not just what you want. That and any Why Us are the best proof of interest. It’s not just applying and promising.
If you already sent a note, fine. You do not want to overexplain. It won’t convince and may look confused.
