exactly mokimadness

I booked a flight for the 15th. Incredibly expensive. When did statewide flights get so out of control? Anyway, has anyone been to both campuses? Can you tell me which one you liked more? I think the major factors are going to be the campus, likely hood of me getting mugged, money (UCB offered more aid…btw) and the more clout that the name has in the job market.

dude Cal’s campus is ****ing amazing, you will love it once you get there, just give it a lil time to soak in, and you will realize that Cal >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> UCLA

the only way you can truly tell is to tour both of the schools extensively.
Also, take a look and see which school has a higher ranking for your major.
LA has sunset blvd and Beverly hills conveniently right there. There are also a lotta buildings and corporations there so you can compete for internships.
Berkeley of course has San Francisco. I had two older brothers who graduated from Cal. and from what i saw from their friends, if you want to get a job in the corporate world, you would more likely have to commute to San Francisco to work.
Berkeley has the better food. La has the safer neighborhood.
They’re approx. around the same in terms of living and tuition expenses.
Berkeley parking sucks. but LA’s is even worse.
If you want a more liberal and old town feel, then Berkeley is for you. Its town is a bit more ghetto because East Oakland is right next to the campus.
If you enjoy living in a bubble (such as if you grew up in the valley or the OC) and want to live in relative peace and quiet, LA is for you.
But in the end, its up to you

Berkeley is 2nd in the nation for my major behind MIT. UCLA is 13th. But I far prefer the feel of UCLA to Berkeley. Ideally, Stanford is the perfect mix of the two. But we all know thats not happening. I CANT DECIDE!!!

^ what is the major btw?

Hi! I’m on the fence between UCLA and CAL, as well.

I’m leaning toward CAL. I visited both campuses about a year ago and both were gorgeous. CAL’s campus, however, was just perfect. I loved that it truly felt like a “college town” and that it was a little community of intelligent students. I’m from southern California, so the thought of moving 8 hours away is a little scary, but exciting because I will finally be on my own.

Even just looking at this page gives me more reason to go to CAL:[A Dozen Secret Study Sites at UC Berkeley](A Dozen Secret Study Sites at UC Berkeley)

Tough decision, though.

My vote is for UCLA. I had a less than stellar experience when I checked out Berkeley.

I went and visited Berkeley in January. My cousin, who lives in San Jose took me up there. She pretty much complained the entire ride up- about the rain, the drive, everything. We got there, and the campus tour started from the tower because it was MLK day, and I didn’t realize it was a holiday. So, I sprinted to the Campenile, and she just decided to wait in the car. So, its POURING rain at this point (I’d never been in rain like that before!) Some woman on the tour slipped on the University of California metal plate by the library, so we waited nearly 45 minutes for paramedics, the whole group holding a blue tarp over her so the rain wouldn’t hit her (don’t get me wrong, I was more than happy to help and glad she was alright.) Our tour ended pretty abruptly, I was soaked, had to deal with a b i t c h y cousin, and just wanted to go back to sunny Southern California.

The Berkeley campus, in my opinion (aside from the chaos above) was just not as welcoming as UCLA’s. Not even close, actually. The area around it was cool and very interesting, but very dirty (part of its charm, I suppose?).Whenever I’m at UCLA, I feel very at home amongst the students. I suppose I’m biased because I’m from LA, and am going to UCLA, but isn’t everyone biased at this point? ha ha.

omg Evan i love reading this story, i love the image of the blue tarp over the lady hahahahahahaha
and i would have laughed as i held up the tarp…awww poor lady.

i am completely unbiased at this point and i am from Los Angeles :(

It’s coming down to the difference between loans (Berkeley) and no loans (LA).

I love the feel of Berkeley’s campus infinitely more, for sure. Last time I visited was in August and I knew it was the kind of place that would be a challenge, but would make me a better person in the long run. I really hope I’m able to visit again in the next few weeks.

I have a lot of friends that go to UCLA, and I had to go there for both of my LAUSD AcaDeca competitions, so the campus isn’t anything new for me. Everytime I’ve been there I never felt the same spark I felt at Berkeley. In fact, I was there yesterday for the STOMP conference and it almost felt deterring.

A part of me feels like since I already saved a ton of money by going to community college I should just keep up the trend and instead rack up the loans for grad school. The other part of me feels like it’d be worth it to go to a campus I genuinely love.

@ vintij: You and I have pondered the intricacies and most minute details of both schools as we’ve combed this site. I feel that you should go to Berkeley. Trust in me.

@ solidblu: HAHAHAHA so true. Well said.

Talking points, huh?!

Both are great universities, both have positives and negatives.

However, you will have to go to UCLA. Why? Have you ever tried to get a UCLA decal off your car?!?!? It ain’t gonna happen. You made the decision yourself when you put the decal on the car. Now, if you change your mind, you’ll have to SELL the damned thing, and it’s probably a perfect car for you, that you love to death. Which you’d have to do anyway if you decided on Berkeley, because Berkeley and cars do NOT, I repeat, NOT mix.

I loved that video you posted about Berkeley, TransferUC!! Gave me goosebumps!

On the other hand, I also loved the video DCsports posted…dang man…I hate to be the perv I am right now, but that Undie run is majorly tipping the scales in UCLA’s favor hahaha…psych!!! I’m still going with Berkeley for now, but I’ll definitely make sure one of my LA visits coincides with the Undie run :D

@emil haha I know right man!? it rlly does feel limitless over there haha

Lol @ ucla77!

It really depends on the major. Generally, Berkeley is a much better school from the point of view of academic and research quality, as well as geographical position in California. I’ve heard also that UCLA has great programs in the medical and psychology, even economy majors. But as soon as you start talking about comparison of engineering, business, law programs, Berkeley is obviously superior in every aspect.

You have to consider what you want from a school. Generally speaking, Berkeley will make your work very hard, and has an excellent reputation for preparing students for graduate study. But let’s say you just want to graduate to find a job in the industry. Then it’s a whole new story. I also suggest visiting each campus to see how well you fit, or don’t fit, in the environment. LA is a busy and polluted city while Berkeley is a calm hill near the ocean.

I would join Cal.

Berkeley .

The top three are

UCB

Berkeley

Cal

take your pic out of those imo

@ moki: Normally I’d go with Berkeley, but I have a Cal iPhone case. The indecision is killing me.

I visited Berkeley today.

It helped a lot in the decision process.

I’m going to attend UC Berkeley and although when I was considering UCLA or Cal, I now have absolutely no regrets whatsoever. UC Berkeley is simply amazing in so many aspects (academics, reputation, rigor, location, identity, heritage, culture, feel, student body dedication, school pride, etc, etc, etc.) It’s truly world renowned… That’s not just a saying in Berkeley’s case, it’s the truth.

Anyone who’s on the fence should visit the school.

@ mikei: Nice man! I was going to go up today too, but I had a ton of hw. Also, I’m heading there Tuesday anyway.

You provided the exact description that I would have described about Berkeley. It really is amazing there.
