Convince me!

Ok so I realize this is a strange thing to ask, but can someone (or multiple people) convince me on why I should go to tulane? Pretend like I'm your best friend or something and tell me why I should come.

I really like tulane, but I need other kids perspectiveson why it's awesome. I'm right on the fence between tulane and another school, I just need to be told WHY for each one.

And don't give me sass about "oh well if you're not convinced, you shouldn't consider it." bc I'm seriously considering it... I just need that straw that breaks the camels back.

(If your answer was "there are hot boys" I would be totally satisfied)

Well, people (girls) say my ds is “hot”

sharkie, i was right there with you.
my parents are still insisting i go visit other schools to make an informed decision - ohio state, pitt, indiana u, purdue. but i know tulane is right for me, and i’ll tell you why. this might vary based on the other school that you’re choosing between though.

i think tulane has something a lot of prestigious schools don’t have - it has balance. you might’ve heard this a lot, but it’s smart kids who can have a good time. now i don’t know if that your scene, but to me personally it really appeals to have the kid killing the curve in my orgo chem class be out partying the next night. i just think that’s a well rounded student body in my opinion - there’s competition, but at the end of the day everything is laid back.

for me, music is also a large part of my life and in NOLA, music is HUGE! that was something that impacted my decision (might be petty, but not to me). i think it’s the city with the most culture - having lived in many different states, i wanted a new opportunity. going to pitt, ohio state, etc. would all be nice, but NOTHING compares to going to school in new orleans. i want that experience.

as a pre-med, there’s so many programs tulane has for me it’s RIDICULOUS. newcomb scholars, creative premedical scholars, TAP-TP, 4+1 masters program, it’s absolutely amazing how many opportunities there are. i’m also a big community service buff so the fact that i get to take time and help rebuild the city i go to school in? i love that. i want to make a difference, and i think NOLA post katrina, while recovering, is the prime place that i could do that, in contrast to say, columbus or west lafayette. it just gives me everything i want in an experience.

i think the main factor that concerned me and my parents was the prestige of tulane. while tulane isn’t necessarily a top 25 school, i think the students there are just as bright, if not brighter. theres many kids that i know who gave up ivy leagues to come here because of the scholarship money, which tulane is very generous with (think about it…post katrina, and they’re giving merit money. why? to attract great students!!!). students at tulane know how to have fun, but they also know how to buckle down and succeed. i truly think at the end of the day, people like tulane students, who have a balance, are very successful and a lot more content with their lives.

if you want to talk about this more feel free to message me! i’ve had all my acceptances since november, and i literally mulled this over for a good month, and mid december i finally chose tulane after EXTENSIVE research. i’m visiting during honors weekend but i’m sure i’ll absolutely love it…i have yet to hear a bad report of a campus visit. it’s pretty much all that’s stopping me from sending my deposit right now :P

good luck!

Even if some things could be considered “petty”, that one is way at the other end of the scale. Music and the arts in general are very important in many of our lives, and you are going to be there for 4 years. You certainly don’t want to be away from the things that are important to you and/or bring you comfort for that long.

Which is why I am even weighing in here, to make the point to the OP not to discount even seemingly little things. Weather, sports scene, boys(lol), whatever is important to you is fair game and you shouldn’t discount it because it seems “petty” or trivial. It would be different if this were a 2 week summer camp, but it is 4 years, most likely. So as students hopefully post their reasons, keep that in mind. It might lead you to the other school, which would be unfortunate for Tulane but might be best for you. That’s what is important.

Nice thread. My D is in the same situation. Has great scholarship offers from PITT, Tulane and Arizona. Hoping to hear more about Tulane. It’s the only school that we have not yet visited; hopefully Honors weekend.

something that i really enjoyed while i was there - the size. it’s perfect. it’s big enough to offer all sorts of classes, electives, and activities while still being small enough that honestly, i probably only took 3-4 classes that had more than 30 students. (and those were low-level science courses i needed for gen-ed requirements). all of my classes junior and senior year were usually around 25-30 people, and some of them were a lot less (for example, my spanish conversation class was capped at 12 people!). it’s a really great way to get to know your professors, and other students in your major. and in general, most of your classes will be with actual professors, and not a ta or phd student, like what often happens at the big state schools.

the size is also good socially, it was small enough that i was able to make a good group of friends, and would also see many acquaintances/people i had things in common with at parties or bars, and walking on campus or in class. however, it’s definitely big enough that not everyone knows your business, and i was still meeting new people my senior year.

hmm…so random things that you wouldn’t know about that are awesome:

tulane’s annual crawfest: it’s a huge crawfish boil on the uc quad, tons of great new orleans bands, tons of crawfish, all day long, and is FREE. god i miss crawfest, definitely one of my favorite things about tulane. and EVERYONE attends. i think it’s usually in april.

speaking of april, springtime in new orleans is beautiful. and speaking of the weather, it’s totally awesome going to class in january in jeans and a sweater…no snow, no boots, no coats, no gloves. i don’t know how people trek to school in the snow! and it’s totally awesome to go out and not have to worry about what to do with your coat. as a girl, you can wear your cute clothes all year long.

and really, tulane gives out free food all the time. i am not kidding, my friends and i made a list one time of all the places and times we could get free food or a meal and we realized we could practically eat dinner for free every night of the week if we tried. (free dinner on wednesdays at hillel, free pizza if you go a movie forum/discussion with the latin american studies department, etc. etc.) there were also random days on campus, like a tuesday, where they’ll have free snowballs (kinda like snowcones, but better), candy, or something else.

oh my goodness, and concerts. we had some great ones…can you believe i saw lil wayne, third eye blind, ludacris, vampire weekend, and girl talk on campus?

and do your research about new orleans! the city itself has so much to offer. also, there are tons of great internship opportunities for students, what with the amount of non-profits and cool businesses in the area. i could keep going but i think i hit the main points that i enjoyed. now pick tulane!!

Reasons everyone (or at least I would think) can appreciate : Weather? NOLA?

Reasons I SPECIFICALLY am considering Tulane (some of which may apply, some may not)
-25K Presidential Scholarship
-Honors Program
*Special honors housing (so if you’re concerned with too many people partying… Butler is an option)
-Great Latin American studies (considering it as a 2nd Major or a Minor)
-Very concerned with community service, global health, etc…
-I can go in with A LOT of AP credits (wouldn’t happen at an Ivy)
-Culture of New Orleans

  • Offer majors in Evolutionary and Ecology AND Environmental Biology which most other schools don’t have
-Still has majors I was considering anyway (Chemistry and Biochemistry)
-… More that I don’t have time to think of now because I have a ton of homework :P

I’m still waiting on my other schools (Tulane is the only school I have a real decision from… got deferred from my ED school but it’s TECHNICALLY not a rejection), so I’ve been looking into Tulane a lot because it’s really my only definite right now.

Exceptional c - the shows are one of the biggest things I am looking forward to. My best friend goes to tulane and he says the concerts are great, and they’re all withing walking distance.

Ah. I’ll probably head out for honors weekend to check it all out.

That is definitely the thing to do.

Hey! Speaking of the concerts… I’m so glad to see your posts! (ExceptionalSea and sharkie). Concerts seem to be a big marketing strategy and hook for getting people to look at schools, but personally I never seemed to have noticed this for Tulane. I am going to enroll for next year soon nonetheless, but I was a little annoyed at the fact that I thought there wouldn’t be many big concerts (besides all the Jazz/Blues and other concerts that NO has to offer, of course!). I only thought this was so because after pretty extensive research on Tulane’s website, I failed to find any sort of schedule or upcoming shows for big artists/bands. Do any of you know if there is in fact a place to find such information? Either way, I am happy that this doesn’t have to be an annoyance anymore!
I am ecstatic and so anxious for Tulane 2015!!

maddles, of course they wouldn’t post that on their site, haha, that’s probably not something they endorse.
try eventful - search new orleans. there’s TONS.

I would think when a group is touring Houston, Dallas, Austin, Atlanta, etc. they will often, although not always of course, stop in New Orleans. Just my sense of things, didn’t research it or anything.

There was a thread similar to this (perhaps a few years back). Someone started a list of 100 reasons to go to Tulane. If someone could find it and post it here, it may be helpful.

Oh man, now we have to update this! After a few weeks of updating, I will ask the moderator to permanently pin it to the board, like they did WUSTL.
