Hey all,
I got accepted to Tulane for Fall 2009. Also, I got a $20,000 per year scholarship. This makes Tulane a very lucrative offer for a person like myself.

The problem is, I've never visited and probably will not be able to visit.

So, I ask, what do you guys like about Tulane? How's the environment? Is it fun? How's the Greek Life?

I know Tulane is a prestigious and great school academically. I really want to know things outside of academics.

Some topics of interest are: social life, greek life, campus details, security, etc...

Also, do you feel in Danger at times? Someone made a comment to me today about how the New Orleans area simply makes you feel unsafe and at risk.

Please give me some information, as I am really interested in Tulane.
Thanks!

OK, well I am giving you a "mom" perspective here, but I think I can help. We just visited last weekend. The campus is located "uptown" almost feels like a suburb, 4 miles from downtown. It is in a beautiful residential location and appeared very safe and clean. The streetcar runs right in front of campus to take you downtown. No need for a car. There are many areas of New Orleans, particularly the 9th ward where it looks like Katrina hit yesterday--I mean almost no progress or rebirth. But most of the downtown, french quarter and certainly uptown look normal (I can't compare to before Katrina but this is my impression). The campus is really nice--flat and easy to get around. The dorms look a little run down, but not any more run down than other schools. The student center and the fitness complex are amazing. Overall, the school just has a great feel. The admissions staff was very warm and welcoming. Tour guides were also excellent. Hope this helps.

JRo - Lots of Tulane students are from Texas. Perhaps you can locate one or two to give you the information you require. I may be incorrect, but my sense is that your questions regarding social life, greek life, environment, and security require specific information that's hard to convey in this type of forum. Good luck with your decision.

While I have driven to and about Tulane, I never took a tour with my D, but New Orleans is a most fascinating city, and quite a party in and of itself. Parts of it are sort of like a European city.
I hope you can figure out a way to visit if you decide to attend: it is a very unique city in the USA.
Congratulations on your acceptance!

I get the impression form my s that there is a lot of partying (he says there are some kids who go out many times a week-- but not him) but I didnt get the impression that there is a significant drug problem.

The Tulane students mostlyhang out at a place near campus called "The boot". There arent many other bars near campus. There are the touristy wtering holes down on BOurbon Street, but they are expensive fot students. Some go to Magazine St. where there are a combination of restaurants, stores and bars. Its a fun area but not easy to get to especially without a car.
