Convincing my parents that Umich is a good school

Basically I want to transfer from UC Berkeley to Umich. To please my mother I will apply to some additional schools that I also like (but are reaches), Northwestern, Cornell, Brown.
What I like about Michigan is the flexibility of their cognitive science program and how diverse the curriculum is. Also the social life, and the beauty of the campus makes it seem like a good match for me. Yet my mother is very biased by rankings and though berkeley is ranked around 21 and michigan at 28, she thinks that it would be some kind of downgrade, which infuriates me.

Any suggestions, or articles to show her to prove Michigans benefits?
I'm from New york btw, so they are both out of state for me.
Also distance is a factor, cost, cost of dorms, social life, strength of the cognitive science program, and environment.

Thank you.

While michigan is a great school, if you have the grades it doesn’t hurt to apply places. Try Vanderbilt-one of the best neuroscience programs in the u.s.

if cost is a factor, brown may not be for you. first, they are need-aware and take financial need into account when making decisions. further, if you were admitted, you would receive a very, very poor financial aid package, making it unaffordable if cost is an issue for you.

A few places in the rankings means nothing, 21 and 28 are essentially equal.

Ask on the UMichigan subforum, some of the UM diehards might have some info. Also, look at some of these other rankings (if you can’t beat 'em, join 'em ;)) and see if you can find some where UM comes out higher (for instance, the WSJ Recruiter rankings):

While I agree that when one applies to B, they need to be conscious that B states that it has limited funds and does not guarantee full need for transfers, some people have gotten good FA packages and some have not. See this thread:

ah my apologies, didnt realize that

^not a problem!

I would attend the school that minimize the cost the most.

Michigan over Berkeley? I’m pretty sure Berkeley >>>>>> Michigan for everything, especially cognitive science. Your mother is right in thinking its a downgrade. Michigan is nowhere near comparable to Berkeley’s reputation. Why do you want to move from warm California into cold Michigan? Just my two-cents. Good luck.

Closing old thread. OP hasn’t posted since opening the thread.
