Convinent Stores around Rice

This is a really basic question that my parents asked and I BSed an answer. So where would a Rice student buy necessities such as toothbrush, shampoo, etc.?

There’s a target about two miles west of campus, down on Main. There’s also a CVS southwest of campus at Holcombe and Greenbriar. That’s all I know of off the top of my head (I don’t have a car, so I just catch rides with others), but I’m positive there’s more near campus.

This is probably one of my only real complaints about Rice. There aren’t really any “convenient” convenient stores that are especially close to the residential areas of campus. That being said, there’s a CVS in Rice Village (there’s a bus that goes to the new graduate apartments if you don’t feel like walking or riding your bike), there’s a Walgreen’s near Memorial Hermann Hospital (within walking distance… should be accessible via light rail, but I’ve never been there), there’s a VERY small convenient store on campus in 13th Street in the RMC (so small that I doubt they have shampoo, but they might… lots of snacks and a few OTC drugs, though), and, lastly, there’s a bus that takes students to SuperTarget (about a mile or so south on Main St.) on Saturdays.

I really wish they would put a Trader Joe’s or something in the Med Center next to the south colleges or somewhere on Sunset near the north colleges (Leebron’s house would be ideal, actually), but that’s simply a wish… Trader Joe’s doesn’t even operate in Texas.

Usually at Walgreens or CVS in the Rice Village. If you’re in a hurry and don’t mind paying a little more, you can buy those things at the Rice Campus Store. Also, if you’re in a college on the south side of campus, you may find it quicker to cross Main Street and use the drug stores in the Medical Center, though these are probably also slightly overpriced.

On Saturdays, Rice runs a shuttle to the closest Target (about 2 miles away) every 30 minutes for your shopping convenience.

The CVS is a 5 minute bike ride away.

Hermes… yeah Texas lacks Trader Joes… its really sad. At least there is a Whole Foods 2 miles away

Maybe I’ll just buy everything in bulk from the Costco by my house and bring it to Rice. =]

Walgreens in the village closed up now btw.

If you realize you forget something when you get to Rice I’m sure your O-week advisers will be happy to help you out.

You can walk to a walgreens in the rainbow building. Right across the street from lovett

Houston is the 4th largest city in the US. I promise you that you will be able to have access to toothbrushes and shampoo while you’re at Rice.
