Convocation Schedule

Next week I will be attending my son's graduation from the college. The schedule indicates the main quadrangle opens at 7:00 am with the conferrring of degrees scheduled to start at 9:15am.

Is there any reason to get there really early (at 7:00 or shortly thereafter)? Is a seat up front worth it? Can I even get a seat up front? Will I actually see my son, or is it just a few speeches and stuff.

I see that gthe college diploma ceremony is at 1:30 on the quad. Should I try to get a good seat for this by rushing back from lunch?

Any comments or advice from those who have been there would be appreciated. Thanks.

I am wondering the same things. Save two seats for my sister and me.

FWIW - I suspect the morning University-wide ceremony will be speeches and a “stand-up, sit-down” conferral of degrees if it is anything like the Wash U version we attended a couple of years ago. I hope the afternoon College ceremony is more like the U of C version we attended 4 years ago, because when the degrees are actually conferred our kids walk the stage in alphabetical order and receive their actual, personal diplomas. It’s worth being up close enough (if possible - or having a telephoto lens!) to see them receive their diploma, shake hands and smile from ear to ear! Since the afternoon is just the College, I recommend finding seats immediately after the morning ceremony. Does anyone know if the lunches are box lunches or some sort of buffet line? I’m thinking we might take lunch shifts (there are 6 of us) so as to keep the seats we want. Last time we did this there was only one ceremony and we managed to get great seats, with much legroom and in the shade. I doubt lightening will strike twice, although one can hope  More than anything, I can’t wait for the bagpipes!

I hope the dress code is cool and casual. Is that your recollection?

The last one I went to, the dress code was head-to-toe rain gear if available. Otherwise, it was anything completely wet.

Under the ponchos, clothing ran the gamut. Some people were dressed to the nines, others had shorts and t-shirts.

Hopefully the sun will shine, as it did when we last attended graduation in 2007. In that case as well, clothing choices varied from the very formal, to the very informal. Be comfortable, but be prepared for the forecasted weather. Hats and sunscreen, or raincoats.

Knock on wood, not shaping up to be too hot, I see.

I envy you all. I still have on more year to go!!!

Now where did I leave my maroon rain poncho?

So it’s going to be the head-to-toe raingear look? Luckily, that’s one I can do! See you all on Saturday.

I’m taking a sunhat, too. Thrilled here that the heat wave departed.
