Cool things from Admitted Student Open Houses

@Lea111 my bad. I forgot about the FL requirement so she’ll have that to complete that also, but she had no problem getting her 4 classes each qtr.

My son is a second year and has always gotten all of the classes that he wanted. This includes taking Philisophical Perspectives (Humanities) in year 1, Power (Sosc) in year 2 and a number of high demand computer science classes.

Any update from this week Admitted Student Days?

^^The Admitted Student Days for this week only started today.

With up to 2400 credits (24 class slots) under your belt by end of 2nd year, a student can theoretically complete all 15 Core courses, the three FL, and up to 1/2 his/her major in that time period. So even if you don’t have AP’s/accreditation exams/placement tests waiving you out of the Core or FL, you will still make decent progress.

Again saw lots of high school kids with their gigantic name tags on campus and so I knew it must be another Admitted Student Days.

I thought the weather was perfect this morning. Then at 3:00 pm the temperature dropped 20 degrees in 10 minutes. Welcoming to Chicago spring ;).

It SNOWED on my Admit Day many years ago. Four Seasons in One Day, IIRC. Coming from CA - that was a bit shocking.

Bundled inside of those giant name tags on the lanyard are meal tickets, a list of activities, and some basic contact info. During our Admitted Students Days last week, it flurried in the late afternoon as we were finishing up. It was pretty.

" it flurried"

Ah, that’s the name for it. DS said it snowed when he was there last week, but only distinct flakes and nothing accumulated on the ground. A few months ago, when he was admitted I posted a thread about what cold weather gear he’d need and people were very helpful with good suggestions. So glad we were able to pick up some cold gear in the after Christmas sales. He said his jacket was warm, comfy and waterproof so thanks again to everybody who suggested gear.

@booklady123 Last Years event ranged from flipflops, shorts and T-shirt’s to suit jackets and everything in between. It was rather warm if I recall correctly.

Be comfortable and enjoy your time, well deserved I am sure.

@85bears46 I was there this past week. Weather was beautiful on Thursday, and on Friday the arctic winds came and stole away the sunshine. Campus was absolutely beautiful. I really got a great taste of UChicago, and left me wanting more. Can’t wait for O-week!

Thanks everyone. My son and wife and I attended the admitted students reception today in Philly and also received a report from families that attended both weekends. No news, but confirmation of some stats that have been around a while.

Did anyone see Bill and Melinda Gates a few weeks ago at the Admitted Students Open House? Someone saw Rory Gates at the prospie weekend.

My inclination is that they wouldn’t show up for an open house. A private tour…maybe. There simply too recognizable to go to an open event like that.

How does Bill Gates School of Engineering sound?

You heard that prediction here first.

^^ Nice. Or Gates House.

Woodlawn Residential Commons => Gates Hall

I was at the event on Apr 12-13. Definitely did not see the Gates. Or if they were there, the administration did a great job of keeping a low-profile.

It’s not strictly necessary for parents to show up at this event, especially if you’ve already checked the place out and your kid applied ED. Fortunately for all you Bill and Melinda groupies there’s still Move In, Convocation, Family weekends, and graduation.

really hope the boy will be able to have a “normal” college experience and not have people searching him out just because of his father…
