Cool things from Admitted Student Open Houses

I’d certainly hope this doesn’t become a circus for the kid’s sake. He didn’t choose to be born into the family and deserves to be treated as a normal first year in my opinion.

Celebrities kids usually don’t go to U of C. This is why I think this is a rare event.

Frankly, I give Rory a lot of credit not to go to HYPS to hang out with the rich and famous circle.

The daughter of the President of China spent 4 years at Harvard and no one even got a picture of her. But I presume Malia Obama will have a much higher profile and more security details.

Xi’s daughter used an assumed name, and Chinese Leadership does not permit photos of their kids, so it was much easier to fly under the radar

Rory was there. I was a prospie the first weekend and I talked to someone who met him. She said he was a cool dude.

An assumed name? What happens when your parents show up on campus? How do you explain to your roomies and friends?

I also heard that the son of the current Princeton President is a UChicago student. Read into that what you will… :stuck_out_tongue:

^^that’s true - he’s in the class of 2020 IIRC.

.

It’s not remotely surprising that the child of an elite academic would be at the University of Chicago. That’s the group where the Chicago brand is strongest!

@JHS - I wasn’t indicating surprise - my comment was in intended as (lighthearted) jab at Princeton. In light of the whole “Rory Gates can go wherever he wants but he chose Chicago” conversation. Was just a joke…

Eisgruber went to law school at Chicago.

Looks like Rory Gates is indeed going to UChicago.

Daddy Bill just bought a 1.25 million dollar mansion in Hyde Park.

I am fairly familiar with Hyde Park real estate. That house is not in a great location according to my realtor friend. Besides, a $1.25 million house hardly qualifies as a mansion even in Hyde Park. I know people living in 12,000 sq. ft. mansion in Kenwood. Yet even at that size it still will be dwarfed by the Gates 30,000 sq. ft. mansion in Medina. If Ken Griffin can spend $59 million to buy a 4 floor Gold Coast condo, Gates with net worth of 10 times of Griffin can easily buy similar property in downtown.

Here is my speculation. I think Bill and Melinda basically buy this place for Rory so that if he wants to host a party for his friends, they can all go together to a place near his dorm. This house is only 3 minute walk from Campus North.

Thats my guess too, it is for the kid, not the parents.

Or… Bill/Melinda just wants a permanent place to crash near campus when their schedule opens up and want to visit their kid, without having to deal with hotel reservations. Or they want a live-in chef/nutritionist nearby to deliver food for the kid living at North to make sure he is not just eating ramen.

So many possibilities.

^^who needs a chef when you have ramen

It might be for the bodyguards.

Who’s to say he’s going to get into North? What if he ends up in BJ?

I’m in the class of 2022, and I can confirm that Rory Gates is attending (I’m sure most people wanted to keep it on the down-low out of respect, but I guess the cat’s out of the bag now…). He also applied ED, so he wasn’t really “choosing” between schools––UChicago was his #1. I’m not sure which dorm he wants, as he hasn’t voted in any of the dorm polls in the Facebook group, as far as I can tell.

I read that once he joined the FB Class of 22 Admitted Student Group, the cat was out of the bag then. I was told that someone posted on the Chinese equivalent of CC a screen shot of his greeting to the group.

There have been and there are rich kids at U of C but none of them is as high profile as Rory. Of course we all wish him having an wonderful education here. I was told that his intended major would be political science/sociology and so he should be in the right place as U of C Social Science Division is definitely world class.

He has been very active in the Facebook group and to that groups credit, all of them have been “you’re one of us” and not a single stating of the obvious.
