COOP, CUE, etc...

Who's going and to what?
CUE, COBOP, COHOP, COROP???

Also, if any current students are reading this, do you recommend these pre-orientation programs?

From a veteran leader - COBOP IS THE GREATEST. HOP and ROP are cool too. BOP is better...
CUE....not nearly as great as BOP. If you have questions on BOP (or hop or rop) feel free to ask.

do we need to bring our own bikes to COBOP?

I just saw on the application that bikes are provided without charge for COBOP

you may bring your own bike if you like though.

how experienced do you have to be?

ahhh all these acronyms make my head spin :-P

Experience is not required. Just know how to ride a bike, and dont mind sleeping in a tent and youre good!

Do I have to know how to ride a bike very well? Open space is fine, but I could never handle NY traffic.

if you want a workout, do COBOP and COHOP. they're cool but you'll be huffing and puffing for hours.

if you want a BEAUTIFUL, relaxing chill time, getting a tan, and tackling waterfalls from time to time and chill with future best friends in skimpy bathing suits, do COROP -- the river version of COOP. thats what i did.

watch out for the CUE brats and their water balloons when you do the sleepover under the stars.

I think I'm going to do CUE. Who are the "CUE brats"?

Also, do CUE people move-in earlier or do they carry all their stuff to the CUE dorms and then move to the regular dorms later?

CUE moves in early, as do COOPers into your very own dorms for the year. So you get to see your room before anyone else.
the brats are the CUE kids who attack COOP early in the morning with water balloons every year as COOPers sleep together on furnald lawn. our year though, we fought them back with a bucketload of balloons of our own.

yes indeed. if we get our way they wont be waterballooning any longer. and if they try we always have retaliation...darn cue brats.
COOP is definately the best experience for your freshman year.

Seconding Soho, my son did COROP last year, and had a totally relaxing, fun, "chill" time. He would recommend it totally.

Being an accomplished hiker or camper is not necessary. My daughter had been camping only once (and never in a tent) before going on the COHOP trip. She was/is pretty fit so she chose the most demanding hiking group and loved it. It was a great way to break the ice with some incoming first year students. The group leaders were an excellent resource for information about life at Columbia.

TOT:
Garland, how did your son do in the housing lottery? Where is he living next year?

EE: He's is a walkthrough double in Wien. Supposedly the least loved dorm, but he and roomie get their own rooms, and that's what they wanted regardless of location. He's got the "outer" room, and he says it's enormous.

How 'bout your D?

Garland: She will be living at 47 Clairemont in a suite. She has managed to snag one of the singles and is pleased as punch.

She lived above Nussbaum and Wu last year. I wonder if she will miss easy access to their food? :)

i think i'll do the biking one :)

walkthrough double in Wien? that's what I'm doing for next semester.
