what is this school like? how hard is it compared to a school like mit? do graduates get into good grad schools?

My daughter is a sophomore in the engineering school and she loves it there. It is tough but the school is small enough so that the student/teacher ratio is high and you can always get help from the professors. I believe the course load is at par to MIT (though it did not seem to be as competitive) since I personnally know of students that get accepted to MIT, Stanford, and Princeton.

Unlike MIT, I think acceptance to Cooper is very much "numbers" driven - meaning you need to have decent SAT scores etc.

I need to clarify my last statement. I did not mean to say that MIT is not numbers driven - except that for MIT - high scores are not everything since I've known of kids that have perfect SAT I & IIs that did not get accepted this year.

when are we going to hear from cooper union? my son applied to the engineering school...what's the campus life like? the dorm life like? are there book stores on campus or must you go into the wilds of NYC?

My daughter received her acceptance the last week of March. I believe Cooper should be sending out the decision letters next week. Actually she receive the congratulation/welcoming email directly from Cooper first and then the package was delivered via FedEx that same day.

All freshmen are offered residence in the dorm and my daughter have been able to get all her books either on-line or in the various bookstores around the school.

There are social events and for my daughter's year, they had outings/night cruises with the alumni the first week during orientation. Since the school is located right in Manhattan, your son should be able to get anything he needs. By the way, there's a KMART right round the corner so do not worry if he forgets to bring necessities from home.

My son also applied to the engineering school this year and we are waiting to hear from Cooper as well.

Would like to wish lots of luck for all that applied to Cooper.

Worriedmom,

Thank you for your wishes. My son has got accepted into CU for EE and he is going to accept it. And thank you for all those tips from your daughter's experience. Since she is sophomore she must be staying outside. How was her experience with finding accomodations outside. I know these questions are vastly pre-mature at this time, since S will staying in the dorm for the first year.

Good luck to all of you and I hope that you all have acceptance letters by now.

Hello Sugee,

My son has also been accepted to the EE program at Cooper Union. He is now deciding between Cooper, UPenn (M&T) program or Stanford. He is currently leaning towards UPenn's M&T program but we are now in the decision making phase.

My daughter is now sharing a very nice 3 bedroom apartment that is only 10 minutes from the school. Actually we were lucky to find this place but had to go through a broker (which was relatively expensive). Let me know when the time comes and I will be able to provide you with some pointers. Since your S is a freshman, my recommendation is for him to stay in the dorm and that way he will be able to meet future potential room-mates.

Will you be visiting the Cooper Union Open house this Thursday, 4/14th ? I will be bringing my son to visit UPenn (they have preview days on 4/14 & 4/15th). so we will be unable to attend the Cooper event.

Hope this helps. I wish my son decides to attend Cooper. It is really a great school and on top of that, it's tuition free which will allow us to spend the money on graduate school. Unfortunately, it is his life and as a parents, all we can do is advise.

Worriedmom,

Thank you for your generous offer of help. My S is also admitted in EE and yes, we will be attending the open house next week.

Firstly, congragulations to you on your son's success. It must be a difficult choice to make when you have 3 very fabulous options in front of you. If your S is the kind of child that grabs research and other creative opportunities, I would think that there would be more to grab at Upenn and Stanford than at Cooper. Well, I might be wrong, just my impression.

My S was interested in a small to medium private school with a strong engineering bias. Princeton and Swarthmore were his first 2 choices - both with great engineering programs within the Ivy-group and top-LAC group respectively. Cooper was his third choice. All the 3 would have cost us the same, going by Princeton's EFC calculation for us, and the fact that Swarthmore is as generous as Princeton. Since he was rejected at both the first and second, the decision was easy to make.

Please do keep us posted on your final decision.

Worriedmom: Your daughter is MC, majoring in Civil? Tell her Bolby says hi.
