Honestly, depends on the class. If your electives in Divisional studies are popular, like Econ 101 or Elementary Stats, you'll likely have a large lecture and a small discussion around 15-20 students. If you take something a little less popular, like Sociobiology, the class might just be 50 students and still have a small discussion.

Core has huge lectures too, though. Each class in core has a big lecture and then a smaller discussion section or sections, of comparable size to those in Divisional. The difference is that your discussion will be taught by a Professor and not a teaching fellow, as will be the case with Divisional.

Hey BUBailey,

Can you describe ways to satisfy the language requirement? Are there creative ways, like overseas travel for a semester, or sign language and so forth? How do you test out? Etc.

Thanks so much for your info!

you can test out of a language by taking the ap test or getting a 560 on the sat II for a language.

If you are bilingual, you can take an exam that would allow you to complete the requirement. They give you a newspaper article or something like that and ask you to read it and answer questions about it. Basically you just have to prove that you can read, write, and speak the language. So overseas travel could help you out in this department, but you’d have to prove you learned the language.

On the AP test you have to get a 3,4, or 5 to test out or a 4 or 5 in Latin.

Otherwise you have to complete through the 4th semester of a language.

I heard that you can be exempted from taking math gen.ed. classes if you got above a certain SAT math score, is that true?

not exactly. If you get a 23 on your ACT math, a 580 (?) on your SAT, or a 3, 4, or 5 on a math AP, then you’ve satisfied the BU math requirement. But it’s just kind of like an entrance requirement. This means you just don’t have to take any additional math classes when you get here. ie…if you took core, you don’t have a math class because it’s built into your natural science classes. If you didn’t get those scores on your tests, you would have to take another math class and pass it to satisfy the bu requirement. Additionally, if you took divisional studies and wanted to take computer science instead of math, you would need to have passed those tests.

Oh okay; thanks a lot for the response.

Oh my, who bumped this thread? I started this like a year ago? Proud to say I’m a current BU student now Hopefully this thread will help prospective students.

BTW, I’m doing divisionals. If you have any questions, go ahead.
