CoRe Experience for Engineering

I got an invitation to the CoRe program and was wondering if any current MSU engineering students can elaborate on the program.

What’s it like?
What do you like/dislike about it?
and what is the program about in general that isn’t mentioned on the website.

I also have some questions about this. First off, how significant is participating in this program really? I much rather stay in the Brody neighborhood if the only real benefit of CoRE is that you get to live with people majoring in engineering. If there are much greater benefits than this and they are not overselling the academic support aspect of the program, I might just be forced to take part in it.

Furthermore, is it possible to decide if you want to participate in it AFTER finding out what neighborhood/dorm you’ve been placed in? (Because if I don’t end up in Brody anyway, then I have no preference between any of the other halls and I might as well stay in the CoRe program).

Thanks in Advance!

Anyone?^

Does anyone of CC have any experience with CoRe…?

@jt1216 Looks like it’s just us lol

Well the CoRe program is based in wilson if you didn’t know about that. You may want to set a preference to live there in the first place just in case. South isn’t a bad place to live period, as all the dorms have decent cafs except for wonders which doesn’t have one at all and isn’t far from the College of Engineering

Hey! So I’m a freshman at MSU right now, and i’m living in Wilson where the CoRe program is, and let me tell you, it’s one of the best decisions I could’ve ever made. You get to live with people from your major and this really helps when it comes to homework or group studying. Also, Wilson is like a 10 minute walk to the the College of Engineering.
Apart from that, your academic advising, career fairs, engineering related events, learning resources specific to engineering and most of your classes will be around or in the South Neighborhood. Engineers have free printing from the labs, and these are located in the South Neighborhood (Wilson) and the Engineering Building. Most of the people from your classes will be living in the same dorm as you and that can be pretty helpful at times.

There’s nothing in particular that i dislike about CoRe. Wilson is one of the best dorms you can live in as a freshman at MSU (also, the Wilson caf has food till midnight on weekdays).

Most of your classes will be in or around the College of Engineering, Wells Hall and the Biomedical and Physical Sciences Building- all of which are less than a 15 minute walk from Wilson. Living in Wilson is pretty convenient as a freshman- you can move to other parts of the campus after freshman year, once you get to know the campus better.

@APlennox @jt1216 Hey, I too was invited to the core program. So what have you guys finally decided, are you going to do it or are you going to opt out of it?

@elysium305 Thanks for responding with the info. I was leaning towards doing it but just wanted someone’s firsthand experience

@k_03 Probably. I have nothing better to do lol. The only concern that I have is that from reading the letter they sent a few months back is that it seems like they assign you a roommate and it is final.

You can pick your own roommate! A couple of my friends did that this year.

@elysium305 Thanks for clearing that up! The wording of the letter seemed awkward and was something like “All roommate appointments are final” which I read as they chose your roommate and that it’s final.

@elysium305 @APlennox Hey, so I was also invited to the Honors Program besides being invited to participate in the Core Program. Does Wilson have a honors floor or will I have to choose between the two if a Honors floor is not there in Wilson.

@k_03 By the looks of one of their tweets, it seems like you should be able to do both (https://twitter.com/i/web/status/842792564164038658) but I would still either email them or tweet at them to make sure.

@APlennox Thank You! I will contact them.
