Core requirement question

Is the core requirement English Literature the same thing as english 101?
would placing out of english 101 because of my sat score mean the core requirement english literature is also fullfilled?

I am pretty sure they are different. I think you are exempt from the Academic Writing portion of fundamental studies. You still need to fulfill the literature portion of CORE though.

you would have your english 101 requirement filled and so no freshman english, but youd still have to take junior english for your CORE requirements. you could also opt to take freshman english and if you get an A you dont have to take junior english, thats another option!

So english literature is a junior english?

not sure what you mean by english literature, there are many junior english classes. you can take one that pertains to your major or just one for fun. they include technical writing, business writing, writing for health professionals, law writing and things along those lines

CORE English requirements: 6 credits, 2 courses –

ENGL101. You can be exempt with an SAT score of 670 or higher, or a 4 or 5 on the AP exam. I know the new gen ed plan gets rid of this, but it won’t be in effect for the incoming Fall 2010 students.

Professional Writing Classes. These are the junior level English classes you’ll take. A 300 level class… they have different ones from Writing For the Arts to Writing About Economics, and many more. You can (currently) get out of this requirement if you take ENGL101 and get an “A” in the course.

English lit is a totally different core requirement. you are excempted by getting a 4 or 5 on AP Lit, or 5 or higher on IB English. English 101 is a writing requirement which is only exempted by getting a 670 or higher on the Verbal SAT.

shayman – are you sure? I was going off the official university’s CORE requirements, and the only english requirements are the two (engl101 and professional/junior english)…

fresh42jazz- there is the fundamental studies that you are looking at that has academic writing (engl 101) and professional writing. In addition to that there is a literature requirement in the distributive part of CORE that would need to be fulfilled

The English Lit requirement comes under “Distributive Studies,” specifically Humanities. Lit is a HL.

Also, beginning with Fall 2011, students will no longer be able to place out of ENGL101 with their SAT scores. Also requirements will change dramatically.

yes I’m sure, I go here.

Moment of dumbness on my part. I was thinking of how there are only 2 english requirements, then the lit (HL) requirement, which can range from Greek and Roman Mythology (CLAS170) to Viking Culture and Civilization (GERM283) to the typical “Intro to Novel” or “Intro to Poetry.” :)

Thanks for all the information.
ha now i know i need to take the ap exam.
