Cornell 2015 Hopefuls

everyone,

is it really easier to get in Early Decision? i mean, supposedly if you apply Regular Decision, your GPA might get higher and so will your SAT score. so, couldn’t the higher ED acceptance rate be attributed to a better applicant pool?

So I called into admissions to ask them about whether I could take the SAT Subject Test in Nov and they said that I could but my test scores might not make it to them in time to be read by the adcom. Does anyone know usually how long it takes for them to get to and read through the applications? Also how long does it take for the Subject Test scores to be released?

can someone ask corenll admissions if we do SAT II in nov will they try to wait wait for the results to come in to Cornell if we do rush submit ?

because it isn’t really fair that we study so much and in nov when we do the test they wont get our scores ?

also if i submit multiple scores for ACT . SAT I and SAT II will they take my highest ones ?

maybe you should have taken them earlier then :S

The maximum essay length is NOT 500 words. You can write as much as you want, though I believe the minimum is 250 or so.

However, clearly, less is more in this case, since admissions officers have so much to read. They would read even a 1000 word essay, but unless all of those thousand words had to be there (which is, of course, very possible), the admissions officers could become aggravated with your application.

Americanschools, if you are certain all of the words are pertinent and you are completely unable to remove any, an ~850 word essay would be fine. 700 words is just an arbitrary guideline. Clearly not every essay will be as long or as short as that. Just make sure you are comfortable with its length.

Also, in regard to SAT scores, on the website it says they will take your November SAT scores. I spoke to an admissions officer and she said while it’s true, there is no guarantee they will actually receive them in time for consideration. October scores, however, will most likely make it on time.

Be sure to mark that the score is pending on the Common Application (i.e., mark the November 2010 test date for one of your exams and leave the score blank).

They will take the highest combined ACT score, but they will NOT superscore the ACT (i.e., take the highest score of all the tests for each section and combine them). However, they will superscore the SAT, but only for Math and Critical Reading (even though Cornell requires you to take the Writing section, they never consider it, so your score will be out of 1600).

They will also take your highest Subject Test score.

^^ I am taking them on Oct 9. Nov 6 is a back up if my score isn’t what i wanted :frowning: . Btw, when do we have to sign the ED agreement by for Cornelle engineering.?

^ When you submit the application.

oh okay! thanks man. So i dont need to submit the agreement at a certain date before nov 1 right  .

is it possible to get into cals with 610 cr and 610 math but a very good fit?

I think it is possible, but you would need VERY good fit. Like the best fit out of every single applicant. I’m also an applicant, but my experience has been that program fit is a big deal at Cornell. I’m applying to one of the more specialized schools, but the admissions officer I talked with stressed fit several times over the course of our conversation.

In short, I think it’s possible but unlikely. I don’t want to get your hopes up, but I also think it’s worth while for you to apply.

Actually, they will take the highest in each section of all your dates for the ACT, they just won’t combine them into an arbitrary “composite score” since it is a geometric score not arithmetic.

Does anyone know if it’s better to send a 2230 SAT score or a 33 ACT score?

Depends how you did on each subject separately.

Each subject on each test?

ACT: 33 - 34 English, 32 Math, 32 Reading, 33 Science
SAT (superscore): 2240 - 720 CR, 770M, 750W (11 essay)
SAT (highest single sitting): 2230 - 710 CR, 770M, 750W (11 essay)

Send both, they will use the higher equivalent score of SAT and ACT.

To answer your question though, a 33 is equivalent to a 1460 CR+M, and a 34 writing is equivalent to a 770 on SAT W

Okay, I was thinking of sending both, but in the application guideline (for ILR), they say that if you send SAT I (+ 1 SATII Math), you do not need to send the ACT and vice versa. Therefore, I was thinking that sending both would be overzealous or inattentive to the directions given. Or maybe I’m just overanalyzing it…

You are “overanalyzing”…send all your scores and let them figure it out. We have all of our students scores on their transcripts (unless they request to have them taken off) and it hasn’t hurt our acceptence rate at Cornell, even with borderline scores.

so i should send all my my act scores for all attempts ( i will make one sept 11 and one oct 23) and all my sat II scores to them and they will probably just look at my highest ones ?

From what I heard they don’t superscore the ACT. Maybe I’m wrong, but I remember clearly that the admissions officer said they only take your highest total score.

glad to hear  what if i submit all act and sat I scores. will they look at both and pick the highest ?
