Cornell asked me to apply to their Hotel Adminstration School?

Hi all, I applied to Cornell’s Dyson Business school for the RD round as a Hispanic/first generation with a 2070 (680, 700, 690). I received a call earlier and was told that due to my “diverse interests” Cornell wants to know if I’d consider applying to their Hotel Management school. What does this say about my application to Dyson; am I on the fence, but Cornell still wants me in another department? Should I pull through and apply to the HM school too? Thanks everyone.

If you REALLY want to go to Cornell, I would suggest that you take them up on their offer.

Say yes. The hotel admin is also a business degree and when I reviewed the places students went they also went to some of the same places as Dyson. I have a feeling it is a better chance of admissions for you and they are throwing you a bone.

Yes Cornell might want you in another department, I know it might be flattering but, please think before making a decision. I have a friend, 3 years senior to me, she also got the same call but after decisions were released and she had already been rejected by Cornell she applied to HM and got in. She wants to transfer to business but she cannot now, think hard and figure out what you really want before making a decision.

Thanks everyone for the insight. Bored1997, I ended up applying to both departments; I felt that they called me because Dyson wouldn’t accept me. Could that be the case, or am I being pessimistic?

Another way to put it; did I just seal my fate out of Dyson?

I don’t know I am no expert by any means. I just had an example of a person to whom this happened.

I’m under the impression that Dyson’s giving you a soft rejection (7-8% acceptance rate), but Cornell as a whole is still interested in your application and is trying to get you to apply for another capacity.

Good luck!

What work/volunteer experience do you have?

Hotel offers similar curriculum, except with hospitality as the main focus. They offer a minor in commercial real estate management, which is not offered in AEM. Many Hotellies get jobs in IB, PE and consulting. Hotel school has the highest employment rate and strongest alumni network. They also have the best looking students.

111wilsonpark, my supplement essay discussed my work experience in my parent’s pizzeria, which I noted that they lost.

If it matters at all, I was deferred by Harvard with a slightly weaker resume and slightly weaker essays (I thought they were my best when I applied EA…)

I feel the same way too, Coriander. She told me that Dyson will still be reviewing my application though, so technically I’m applying to Cornell twice. But cause Dyson doesn’t want me :-/

IMO: review the curriculum and other features of the College of Hotel Administration. If you want to go there,
after your review, say yes to them.,

But just because somebody offers you something doesn’t mean you actually want it, in preference to anything else. Just because it suits them for you to apply there doesn’t necessarily mean it suits you. Presumably if you wanted Hotel so much you would have appled there in the first place. They are asking you now to give it a second look, so you should do that. But after you do that, perhaps there may be other colleges you have already applied to, and will likely be admitted to, that you like better for you than Hotel.

Then again, perhaps not.

Dyson is a tiny program with few first year students. Everyone who applys to Dyson should have an alternative such as Economics at CAS, or ILR.
