@verizonwireless
I currently attend Carnegie Mellon University and they enforce a solid letter grading system where only A’s or B’s are given; no B+'s, which ended up hurting my grades a lot last semester because my B+'s became B’s. I contacted Cornell about this and they told me that they would take it into consideration and my 3.24 wont automatically result in a rejection. I’m a transfer option applicant for HumEc btw, not ILR, and the director of admissions Paul Fisher was super vague about everything and just told me to hope for the best sighs
This process is super stressful, I cant even enjoy my freshman year
@ccollege2020 where did you go for Freshman year?
And Ian, with whom I spoke in late Feb, when speaking about the midterm report, told me that “anything under a B+ will automatically result in the removal of the transfer option”. I then asked if I could still get in, as it look like I was on course to get a B- in my introductory physics course, he said that it is possible, but that my application would be lumped in with the rest of the transfer apps, and that the “guarantee” part of the TO is gone.
Essentially, from what I can discern, The TO is basically a process where Ian, alone, sees if you met the requirements and if you did, lets you in. If not, he sends your name to the full committee, and there, they decide.
Have you spoken to him recently? Because I would call and ask about your status…
@MachuPichu I know! I can’t agree with you about the stress that this process endures.
I didn’t say that your GPA of 3.24 will result in an automatic rejection. I said that it will take the guarantee away from your offer, and thus, lump you in with the transfer applicants who weren’t offered the TO.
BTW, not to be rude, but why would you go to Carnegie Mellon for Freshman year… It’s relatively expensive, and very hard-- especially since you know you’re leaving in 8 months?
@aihcxx Ok, now I’m super confused.
You already got the acceptance letter in the mail and now another package is coming in the mail in order to inform you about the enrollment info?
When I called, they said that everything would be sent out on the 18th, but you got everything already?
Also, what was ur Freshman GPA and where were you freshman year?
I’m still at BING.
Yeah you’re right. In hindsight, I shouldn’t have went to Carnegie Mellon. People told me that I should attend a college I would be content with staying in the chance that the transfer option didn’t work out.
I’ve spoken to several transfer option applicants from previous years who successfully transferred to Cornell and they told me that Cornell was p lenient with their transfer option applicants. I hope that’s true!!
I’ve been super stressed out since the admissions director was really vague about the admissions process; he did tell me, though, that getting a B wouldn’t revoke me of my transfer option status and admission decisions would be handled on a case-by-case basis. He also told me that I could always reapply again for junior year in the chance that I get rejected, since the transfer option is valid for two years.
Let us wish the best of luck!!! (I cri every time TwT)
Wait, What?
Where does it say that the transfer option lasts for 2 years? And also, what did the admissions director tell you? Like, what did he mean when you said he was pretty lenient? Did you tell him that you don’t meet the reqs?
Also, interestingly enough, I have spoken to previous TO students and they said the exact opposite. Literally, the exact opposite. In my school, Binghamton SUNY, one girl got a B- and her TO was rejected (she later got in, but her app went to full committee) and another guy got a B-, and had to stay at Bing (he’s a junior now), so maybe because you go to a better school, your different.
Also, @aihcxx is Humec, and she got in, so call again…
I’m super anxious too, so I’m in the same boat as you.
I got into much better schools than BING, but I knew that I would leave post-frosh, so I figured that I might as well give myself some cushion and not go to Notre Dame, Vandy or some place like that…
Lastly, what does TwT mean?
Anybody have any idea of how they weigh disciplinary issues? I got in trouble for alcohol intoxication a few months ago, but I was straight up about it and called the CALS transfer office. My grades and GPA are well above what they wanted, thank god. I realize the guarantee is definitely gone, but you would think they would realize I made a stupid mistake and it was a one time thing that won’t happen again (and it’s not like a plagiarized or committed a hate crime or anything)? This has taken years off my life in anxiety.
I got in trouble for alcohol possession in september and have been stressing about it all this time but I still got in. I didn’t tell cornell tho i just waited to see if they’d ask about it (because i assumed my dean would put down that i had to redo alcohol edu on the sanctions part) but they didnt
@igaspard yeah they didn’t put it on my transcript either, so I’m hoping it might help me a bit that I was honest about it when I could just as easily have not said anything…I’m dying, I need to know
If you go to the official transfer option website, it says that the offer is valid for either Sophomore or Junior transfer, hence a 2 year commitment. I know a student who got his TO acceptance rescinded because he got one D and is now in the process of reapplying via the transfer option. So in the worst case scenario that both of us get rejected or rescinded, we can apply again next year!
As for the leniency, that was something I was told from previous transfer option applicants, not the admissions director himself. All he told me was that my first semester GPA was a little concerning, but he will take into consideration my school’s grading policy and improvements in grades. All we can do now is to hope that they’ll be understanding!
Btw TwT is an emoji for a crying face. T’s being the tearing eyes and w being the mouth. Haha
@verizonwireless I got an acceptance letter in the mail. Called humec because there was no way for me to accept the offer, they told me more info was being sent soon but they wanted to let me know early because I had indicated in the past that my semester ends super early (before the end of april) so I would have more time to sort things out with my current school. I think that the package that gets sent out on the 18th will be the same for everyone, I just got kind of a weird pre-acceptance for whatever reason. My freshman GPA my first semester was a 3.92, and this semester will most likely be around a 3.5.
@aihcxx I got a call Tuesday night telling me that I got accepted, and then they told me that all the info would be sent out on the 18th…
Afterwards, I logged onto the site, and nothing was available for me to access, so I got relatively anxious.
I’m ILR Btw, and I hate the anxiety associated with the process.
Do you know if on the 18th, we’ll be able to access all the info and confirm the offer, or if on the 18th, they only send out the letter?
Also, are you excited ! WE’RE IVY LEAGUERS!!!
@MachuPichu I think I got in… They were relatively vague in that they called me and told me that my app was approved and I now have to wait for the 18th.
Call the guy on monday, and Y not transfer out of Carengie mellon and go to a school where its easier to get the required GPA.
Also, do u have plans after college (i.e, law, med, grad school)?
Congrats!!! Yeah I’ll prob take classes at a local community college in the chance that I get rejected from Cornell. I’m not planning on going to law or med school, but I am considering getting an MBA (that typically won’t happen until a few years of full work experience though)
@verizonwireless Did you end up getting a B in your psychology class or something?? Sorry if this is too personal, but I got one B (not a B- ) last semester and now i’m super worried. I got above the 3.3 GPA and the rest of my grades were mostly A’s. However, I thought Ian said to get a B or above period. Btw congrats ~
@MachuPichu I don’t think you’ll get rejected… Most likely, they’ll give you a conditional thing. And why CC, udl Carnegie mellon? Will u still pursue the TO ?
@MaeSakurma I never took Psychology, you mean Physics… And an “A-”.
Ian is super cool, and understanding, but he follows protocol. So if you have the GPA less than 3.3, or if you get less than a B+, he’ll prolly make you take the course over. BTW, not to be rude, but understand where he’s coming from. This is an Ivy League University. This is the top of the top… I mean, this year alone, Cornells acceptance rate was 12.5%.
So hang tight, though to be honest, and this goes for @MachuPichu as well, they probably wont tell you this, but after the 18th, if you didn’t get your acceptance package or official “acceptance”, your application probably went to full committee (just my hunch). So what you guys should do is email Ian nowish… and ask him
Yeah I’ll call the admissions director this upcoming Monday and ask him whether I am still considered as a transfer option applicant or was lumped in with the other reg transfer applications. And yes, I’ll still pursue the TO
@verizonwireless thanks for replying! I looked at the ILR TO Summary we got in July or August and this is exactly what it says “Earn a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.3 during your first year with a grade of B or better in each course and no incompletes or withdrawals” ? So…?
hi class of 2020 GT’s. i was offered a GT and i was wondering if anyone went to a community college or a SUNY school and how their experience was with the transfer? anything you wish you did different, etc. I’m a CALS, Comm. major and am trying to make a decision about what to do my freshman year! thanks
@lgirl555 Don’t go to a prestigious college…
Go to a SUNY and transfer.
Dont get too attached, because you know youll leave.
