Accepted into Humec!
DS (white male) admitted to CAS, plans to study physics. Stats:
-Donât know his exact GPA - he had 3 Bs in his freshman year due in large part to personal issues, straight As other than that. All AP/IB classes except for PE. Large suburban public HS.
-1530 SAT (one sitting)
-5s in AP BC Calc, Physics, and US history. Took other APs but I donât remember the scores. Taking like 6 more at the end of this senior year.
-President of physics club and Science Bowl; participates in other STEM clubs. He led the physics club to the shortlist for an international competition last year.
-Has taken a science research class 3 out of 4 years in HS; participates in scientific research and science fair every year.
-Works 10 hours per week at a tutoring center.
-Competes nationally in jumproping (yes, itâs a real sport although not one recognized by his HS).
As his parent, I think his grades, course selection and test scores all helped him. But I suspect what put him over the top was (1) his recs, including from his physics teacher and his Spanish teacher, both of whom had him for multiple years, and (2) his main essay. He wrote about how much he loves scientific research and how that was something he felt he could only do uniquely at Cornell as an undergrad. His college counselor told him to really zero in on why he wanted to go to Cornell so badly, and he wrote an essay that was very specific to that prompt.
To those who got deferred, you still have a chance to get in during the RD round. I know quite a few parents whose children got accepted after they were deferred during the past few years. So keep up with good work!
Daughter did not get into College of Ag & Life Sciences, but we knew it was a reach.
I do alumni interviewing for Cornell and there is no access to the application. They are informal and non evaluative, there is no report. You just check off if you made contact or not.
