Essays (rating 1-10, details): Common App 7/10, Cornell Supp 8.5/10. Honestly I don’t know how to grade these, seeing as admissions doesn’t give feedback, but I doubt it was my essays that got me in.
Recommendations (rating 1-10, details):

Teacher Rec #1: 8.5-9
Teacher Rec #2: 8.5-9
Counselor Rec: 9.5-10
Additional Rec: 7.5-8
Interview: 8-9

Honestly I don’t know how to grade these. Nothing was absolutely stellar about them (I presume, as I won’t ever read them) but I believe that all of them were very favorable. Waived FERPA.

Reflection

Strengths: Test scores, math grades, summer experiences in the sciences
Weaknesses: Other grades, ECs (lack of leadership), essays
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: Probably because of my demonstrated interest/strength in the sciences (I applied to Engineering) and also because of my counselor rec (he/she was my extended essay advisor and teacher for a class I’m doing well in). I also did a lot of research about cornell engineering (visited twice and attended classes) and incorporated that into my supplement.
Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: N/A (no decisions from anywhere else, withdrawing remaining apps)

General Comments : I’m super stoked that I got accepted, but I also know that a lot of people helped me get here. Remember to feel thankful for all the help we have received from our family, friends, teachers, mentors, and community.

Also it turns out that December 8 (ED Day) was the birthday of my favorite composer Jean Sibelius and I missed it by 5 minutes. Don’t let the craziness of this application process make you lose sight of the nice things in life!

Cornell: 9 or 10 I spent more time on this essay than I did for the rest of my whole application, can’t even tell you how many versions and revisions I went through, detailed how I got interested in engineering, then talked about wanting to join a student project team, specifically the rocketry team, the last part was about wanting to work for an aerospace company to make space travel available to all
Recommendations (rating 1-10, details): 8

Teacher Rec #2: Spanish teacher, I didn’t see it, but he said he would write a “sterling letter” so I guess it was true 7/10

State (if domestic applicant): Connecticut
Country (if international applicant):
School Type: Public
Ethnicity: Hispanic
Gender: Male
Income Bracket: 80K-90K
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): Hispanic

Reflection

Strengths: Writing pieces and recommendations, tried to get a variety of positive aspects about who I am as a person such as work ethic, respectfulness, working well with others
Weaknesses: Lack of pretty much any STEM focused extracurriculars

Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: I’m not sure why I was accepted, but I guess the admissions people thought I would work hard and be a positive influence in the community, which I genuinely plan on doing.
Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: This was the only application I sent out. I was going to send out to USC, Georgia Tech, RPI, Ohio State, UCONN only if I didn’t get accepted

General Comments : I honestly didn’t think I would get in after going on this website and seeing what Cornell has rejected in the past. So I’m just glad that I got in and I want to let people know that you can never tell for certain if you will be accepted/rejected at these types of universities.

Summer Activities:
-None - worked on studying to get perfect SATs for summer before junior year, and worked on my internship summer before senior year
Essays (rating 1-10, details):
My Common App essay was, in my opinion, excellent and thoughtful and showcased my character. I wrote for the prompt about an event that marked the transition from childhood to adulthood. I wrote about how I had grown up going to a playroom at the local supermarket, but I reached the age limit in 3rd grade and had tos top. It was also the year my life became more adult-like because it was the first year of NYS standardized testing on my permanent record, many new types of schoolwork that had to be done, new social challenges as peer pressure intensified and we all became more self-conscious, etc. But I wrote deeply about how adult life became easier over time, as I adjusted to its challenges, and now, I have reached milestones like junior prom and taking SATs, but I will always be that little kid at heart. A major theme in my piece was that making good choices is integral to a positive lifestyle: I started with describing how choices I had to make at the playroom used to be the hardest I faced, but when I aged out I faced new ones at school that would define my life more.

Supplement - Arts and Sciences: really good, talked about why Cornell is uniquely fit for my interests in Psych and InfoSci because it offers college scholars program that lets me integrate these two disciplines and research uniquely what I’m interested in.

Recommendations (rating 1-10, details):

Teacher Rec #1: Didn’t read: FERPA waived: Psych teacher, assume was good but she hadn’t written many before
Teacher Rec #2:Again, couldn’t read due to FERPA waive, but it was my English teacher who loved me and quoted my thesis statement from my research paper. Her letters carry much weight for Cornell admissions (I go to local high school, which sends many students each year to Cornell so they know about her).
Counselor Rec: We basically wrote it for him, he was a temporary fill in and asked us to outline it so he would have a basic framework
Additional Rec: Esteemed prof. of InfoSci at Cornell: invited me to work in his lab: I read it and it was excellent
Interview: N/A

Other

Applied for Financial Aid?: No
Intended Major: Psychology and Information Science
State (if domestic applicant): NY
Country (if international applicant):
School Type: Large public high school, 2000 kids approx: located in Ithaca within walking distance of Cornell: each year Cornell accepts many of us
Ethnicity: White/Caucasian
Gender: Female
Income Bracket: Idk we’re middle class, both parents are Cornell Profs who make good salaries. We live comfortably but aren’t wealthy
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): None - not a legacy (although my older sister went), also just going to the local high school with two professor parents at Cornell.

Reflection

Strengths: SATs (studied so much for those two 800s, I was so happy), awards, courses taken throughout high school were as challenging as possible, including math BC for all grade levels possible and special English/Global combined course for kids into the liberal arts - showed I was well-rounded, especially with the singing extracurricular. Common App essay and art sand sciences supplement
Weaknesses: In general extracurriculars could have been better. 85 in Calc BC for first quarter grades, but my teacher is a Cornell grad who is world-renowned and grades extremely harshly, so this average was among the top third of the class, maybe even top quarter. lowest grade I’ve ever had besides one 86 in Spanish last year (but final avg was an 89).
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: Many kids from my school go, parents have worked there for over fifty years combined and older sis went, so we know the drill on how to get in. I was extremely well-rounded, and professional while also personal in my app, especially in my common app essay
Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: Didn’t apply anywhere else

General Comments : I am thrilled! I was always very confident about my chances - I’m one of the best applicants to Cornell that there were in my class, and many who didn’t have nearly as impressive apps as me got in, but I am grateful that I was accepted because I don’t have to pay tuition due to my parents and this has been my dream school for as long as I can remember, and I feel so validated! Go CU Class of 2021! Go Big Red!!!   Congrats to everyone else who got in!

Common App: Wrote about when my parents lived overseas and my sister and I had to take care of ourselves… My university counselor thought it was good but ???

CALS Supplement: Wrote about my life experiences / struggles that led to finding a passion in nutrition and helping others gain confidence through health. Also thought was good but ???

Recommendations (rating 1-10, details):

Teacher Rec #1: Biology teacher; she really liked me because I always participated in class and helped my peers. But I guess I fell asleep in class quite often since I already knew the material…

Teacher Rec #2: Sports Science Teacher / Extended Essay Supervisor: She really liked my research paper, and kept telling me that I was going to do really well, so I would guess it’d be good…

Counselor Rec: Homeroom tutor recommendation: He liked me and we had a good relationship. He nominated me for 3 major awards in my school (sportswoman, ‘valedictorian’, and academic, although only one went through.)

Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): Latino/Asian mix?

Reflection

Strengths: I took 4 HL’s despite IB requiring only 3. Active in sports. Good rec’s (I think).
Weaknesses: SATs. My 4 year transcript wasn’t too good I guess, but I was always on the boundary between a 6 and a 7 (IB). Not enough larger roles in other ECA’s such as MUN, Honors Societies (even though our school doesn’t have any).

Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected:
I guess I’m not as strong of a candidate? SAT’s were weak and I wasn’t active enough despite student council and sports taking up 90% of my time. Lack of work experience.

Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected:

General Comments :
I just graduated from high school (running a January to December school calendar). I’m starting a 6 month internship at Abbott Lab so I’ll include that for the regular admissions app. Planning to get a job at Starbucks. Currently studying for a Personal Training Certificate and I’ll be sitting my exam late feb/march (so can’t exactly include that huh.) Idk, I’m quite disappointed that I was deferred, especially since I travelled halfway across the world (literally) just to visit Cornell for 3 days to try and see whether the environment was something I would enjoy (and I did), but truth be told seeing all these results really show the super strong candidates out there. Congrats to those accepted! To those deferred - we’re on the same boat so best of luck with your regular decision cycle. To those rejected - sorry to hear that; it’s tough. But hey! There are many of great schools out there and you’re still really great!

Job/Work Experience: Did an internship with an environmental NGO
Volunteer/Community service:Volunteered with Greenpeace
Summer Activities: Wrote a research paper other than the internship and volunteering
Essays (rating 1-10, details): I think both my essay were 9 on 10 or better since my application was not stellar otherwise. (Atleast I think so) The Common App one was on my army background, the qualities it instilled in me and how I survived in a boarding school with those qualities. The supplement showed my passion towards conserving the environment. I put in an innovative idea about generating renewable energy though coastal waves, other than that my essays had no engineering in them. I guess they just need to see your passion!
Recommendations (rating 1-10, details):

Teacher Rec #1: Maths teacher 9 on 10. he like my working style and hard work
Teacher Rec #2: English teacher 9/10. She again admired my hardowrk
Counselor Rec: My school headmaster ( my school is the best in the country, so I guess it was imp as not everyone gets to get one from him) He had written a lot of them so I guess it must be nice

Reflection

Strengths:
Weaknesses: White Midwest private high school Male. Here is the reality/stats. Cornell enrolls 7 % from Midwest (2014, 2015, 2016). 2016 Engineering class size is 792. 7% is 56. So about 56 Midwesterners in Cornell Engineering. Cornell is consistently around 37% white. So about 21 White Midwesterners in Cornell Engineering. Consistently, Cornell is 53% female, engineering maybe higher but some of the 21 will be female, so somewhere around 11-13 White Midwesterner Males in Cornell Engineering. 1/3 of the Engineering comes from ED. So there are about 4 spots for ED White Midwesterner Males in Cornell Engineering, maybe a few more for deferred. My son did not get one of the 4 spots. Now, I am using the whole school stats and projecting them onto the engineering department but the stats do mean something and they are the only thing we have to work with, so they may be a little off, but you get the point. Also, 62.8% of the Cornell class comes from public high schools, my son went to a private high school. I don’t know if his grades, test, ECs were good enough, but the odds were surely against him.

I am not writing this to complain. My son still loves Cornell, he took a shot at one of the 4 spots. This is the reality of the admission process. IF YOU ARE PLANNING TO USE YOUR ED MAKE SURE YOU KNOW THE ODDS OF YOUR SCHOOL. If you are a White Midwestern Male applying to Cornell it is a loooong shot.

On the other hand, we live in Illinois so when my son applies to UIUC he will have the odds on his side (around 70% from Illinois and 54% male).

Essays (rating 1-10, details): CA essay- 10/10 (based on critiques from my reviewer) was about being in band, Cornell supplement 9.5/10 (focused on info sci program)
Recommendations (rating 1-10, details): not sure about these to be honest, didn’t read them and never got super close with teachers. I did supply my recommenders with a resume and other supplements. I also got a recommendation from an English teacher known for writing good ones.

State (if domestic applicant): -
Country (if international applicant): -
School Type: Public
Ethnicity: White

Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): Legacy (Dad+Grandfather)

Strengths: very focused with music and my growth with it, solid GPA + growth from Freshman to Senior year, good essays
Weaknesses: not a lot of extracurriculars, leadership, or clubs, only a few APs
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: legacy, good CA essay, really focused on Information Science program in the Cornell essay (unique major?)
Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: no other results yet

Reflection-

Really am in shock right now. If you are doubting applying not just to Cornell but to any school, just remember with a solid essay and passion in a specific activity (you don’t need to fill your schedule with random extracurriculars) or major you have a chance. Go for it.

**Decision: Deferred **

Objective:

SAT I (breakdown): N/A
ACT (breakdown): 28 (33 English, 31 Reading, 25 Science, 24 Math)
SAT II: 670 US History, 660 Chemistry
Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): idk a 96.6/100

IB (place score in parenthesis):
Senior Year Course Load: AP Biology, AP Literature, AP Statistics, Advanced Economics, Physics, Pre Calc H
Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc) none

Subjective:

Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Varsity tennis 9-12, tutor at school, class council member for 3 years, piano lessons since 3rd grade, math team, member of my town’s library volunteer group, skiing.
Job/Work Experience: none
Volunteer/Community service: I volunteered at a library for a few years and also at a hospital over the summer before my senior year where I helped out on patient floors and in different locations in the hospital.
Summer Activities: volunteering, tennis camp, Georgetown Summer Program for the Medical Institute during one summer for a week…I wrote about that in my Common App essay and how it was fascinating to see cadavers and all the different body parts and patient simulators and then connected it to my interest in public health
Essays (rating 1-10, details): Common App 9/10 I wrote about my bone tumor that developed in seventh grade and how it affected me and how I have grown from that experience. Supplement essay (9/10) maybe…I wrote about my grandmother’s recent Alzheimer’s diagnosis and how the disease has progressed and how that has affected my family and then tied it to the aging and health concentration in my major.
Recommendations (rating 1-10, details):
Teacher Rec #1: 10/10 My AP World teacher she loves me! like she put up a sign in her classroom with my initials on it because she wanted others to be like me haha. She also went to Harvard so she can write well!
Teacher Rec #2: 10/10 My AP Literature teacher who can also write well and I had her for two years and she really
likes me! I have always done really well in her class and she included some of my writing in the letter.
Counselor Rec: prob a 9/10 I think she likes me and we met a lot of times so she had non-generic things to say.
Additional Rec: nope
Interview: it was fine around 30 mins and nothing special…although some weird questions like if she were to ask a friend of mine to choose 3 words that describe me as a person…I said mature, calm, and focused I think. Be ready for those types of questions…though it was super relaxed.

Applied for Financial Aid?: yeah
Intended Major: Human Development in Human Ecology
State (if domestic applicant): NY
Country (if international applicant):
School Type: Public
Ethnicity: White
Gender: Male
Income Bracket: idk 100k?
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): I think my experiences and essays were unique and stood out and also my teacher recs were really good although I never read them.

Reflection

Strengths: essays, recs, upward trend of grades
Weaknesses: obv my ACT score haha yeah that test is such a buzzkill
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: I put in a lot of effort and seemed genuine I think
Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: accepted to UVM early action

General Comments : I’m really pleased with the outcome given my low act score! If you are like me with low test scores then you can still have a chance of not being outright rejected lol. People from my school with act scores of 35 got rejected so scores aren’t everything they’re just numbers that don’t say much about the type of person you are! I think if you focus a lot on the essays and choose your teacher recs wisely then that’s the best way to go. Hoping for the best in the spring although 50 people from my school have already applied so I have lots of competition…but yeah good luck to everyone in the future!!!

Reflection

Strengths:really passionate for my major
Weaknesses: grades and SAT lol
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: Guess my obsession for this industry really shined through. I have good grades, but they aren’t great. I think both my common app and supplement really helped.
Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected:

General Comments :
Grades aren’t the most important thing. I was really stressed out about mine. SHA is a small program and being international made my chances even slimmer. So I was scared that my grades may drag me down… Guess what’s the most important ( or something that made me stand out) is really find a field that you are interested in: probably where you will shine.
I was pretty stressed and was prepared to see deferral or rejection. I am really happy that I had the materials and that luck was also on my side. To those who got deferred/rejected/are applying: If Cornell doesn’t work out, there are so many other great places. Down the road in 20 years, you may think a rejection from Cornell is the best thing that ever happened to you. Believe in yourself but also be open to other options.

Reflection

Strengths:
extracurriculars, experience in the area of study I applied for
Weaknesses:
low test scores, mid-level grades for second semester junior year.

Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected:

See strengths above. At CALS they really value passion, experience, and it doesn’t hurt that I’m a farm kid (:

Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: only applied to Cornell

General Comments :

My best piece of advice is to truly gain some experience in the field you want to go into before applying to Cornell. My much smarter friend got rejected from the hotel school because he didn’t have the experience they were looking for. Scores and grades are not everything!

Whoops forgot to comment about my essays: my PS was comparing my life on the farm with my life as a person with Type 1 Diabetes. I would say it was pretty good but I am obviously biased. It was light and fun and easy to read which definitely helps.
my supplement was the Why CALS/Why Animal Science one. For this I wrote about my experiences in 4-h and how I first became interested in studying animals and what work i have done since then in the animal science/biology fields. This ended up being even longer than my PS because so much of what I do revolves around Animals.

Essays (rating 1-10, details):(9.5/10) It was pretty amazing if I do say so myself. I worked on my essay for about 3 months and was edited by 4 people at least. It was praised and I was told that my voice was palpable in my writing. I wrote it about the influence my father had on my education and how I am working to put my hands to good use.
Recommendations (rating 1-10, details):

Teacher Rec #1: (9/10) Done by my physics teacher. He has known me for 3 years through his classes and a club. I’m sure it was great
