Cornell ED Class of 2025 Discussion Thread

A high test score wasn’t going to make up for a lower gpa even in non covid times.

SHA and Dyson specifically told us that they would not be looking at scores. My son had already submitted his application and sent scores, but they won’t matter.

ok, ILR and the other contract schools may look. Good luck to your son

Hi, My friend applied ED to johnson. she selected the Dyson school but that she would like to be considered for hotel if she didn’t get into dyson. does anyone know if she doesn’t get in to dyson, if she gets put in the regular pile for hotel? or are her chances lower than normal ED hotel applicants?

Primary/Alternate Option for SC Johnson College of Business Applicants: When applying to the SC Johnson College of Business, students must choose to apply directly to either the Hotel School or the Dyson School. However, they also have the option to choose the other school as an alternate. Most students have a clear path and should apply to whichever school they believe is the right fit for them based on the curricular and extra-curricular offerings of the school. This alternate option should only be used by students who can clearly articulate their academic path in both schools, and they will need to fully explain those interests in their supplemental essay. Choosing both schools will not increase a student’s chances of admission, as application review remains highly selective for all academic programs at Cornell. Please note that during Early Decision application review, students will only be considered for admission to their primary choice. This primary/alternate choice is only between the programs within the SC Johnson College of Business, students cannot choose another Cornell college as their alternate option.”

okay thank you so much!! also is Dyson really 2.9% acceptance? That’s the only number she can find.

yes, it is very hard to get into dyson

If essays and LOR are mediocre, will my application be thrown out?

i hope not

I think last year it was about 9% but based on the number of ED applications this year it is going to be much lower acceptance rate for all majors. I wouldn’t focus on that, as you can’t really worry about it. It has the lowest yield because it is one of the smallest programs there and I believe takes a lot of New Yorkers.

I’m keep hearing RD and ED have similar admission rates for SHA due to the high deferral rate for ED SHA applicants. Anyone know about this?

Yes, Dyson’s acceptance rate really is that low. It is tough to get into. However, one reason for this is that Dyson is a state school, so it is very cheap for New York residents. For this reason, Dyson sees a TON of in-state applicants, many of whom are nowhere near qualified for admission. SHA is not state, so it does not have this issue. Dyson is still incredibly difficult to get into, but the abundance of under qualified state kids should ease nerves a bit.

a high test score does compensate for a lower GPA. I’m not talking below 3.5, but definitely if you have a full score and your GPA is just shy of 4.0 UW

Hey, did any international student receive such an email from the Cornell FA office?
It was an email titled ‘International Financial Aid request’…

Dear [Name],

We have received the first piece of your financial aid application for the 2021-2022 academic year. In order to complete your review for financial aid we will need some additional items

. Please provide us with translated documentation verifying your parents’ annual income for the 2019 tax year. This should be a copy of their tax returns, if they were required to file taxes in their country.
. If they were not required to file, a letter from their employer verifying their annual wages for 2019 will suffice. If one of your parents did not earn income they should complete the “2019 Parent Tax Non-Filer Statement” that is attached to this email.
. Provide us with documentation verifying your (the student’s citizenship. This should be a copy of your passport.

All requested documents should be submitted directly to our office via secure online upload…

Post if you received such an email.

Did you receive this email today?

When did you receive that email and from which country are you (if possible)?

For domestic students- does your financial aid portal say anything?
Mine just says “No current to-do item information found”
