Cornell ED Class of 2025 Discussion Thread

I meant releasing the decision date today not decisions

On Ivy wise it says the december 17th date day has been confirmed but like by who lol cause did anyone get an email?

I know! But they would not be releasing it today for Monday if that’s what you meant. If not then no harm.

I know but that’s just what ivy wise said and they got some other dates right so I thought i would mention it

On my son’s application portal there was a form to request a meeting/interview with an alumni. When he clicked to fill the form out, it very clearly stated that they would not be filling out any documentation on the candidates and nothing would be submitted or go in their file that it’s only informative, which is always the case although usually something does get filled out. I think with the extended application date this year they just didn’t have enough turnaround time to deal with reports or anything. I also think higher ups in the Alumni association are the ones doing the interviews, which again aren’t really interviews. Cornell has never used interviews in their application decisions anyway except for Architecture and maybe SHA (can’t remember if that’s the right program).

In the past plenty of students have gotten in without them and plenty have not gotten in with them. It has no bearing really.

If your person is filling out something it’s only because you applied for one of those majors or he is assuming he is supposed to because of prior years. However they are not this year. The person also told my son that as well and my husband is an alum.

It’s officially the 17th!!! It says it on the portal.

Anyone know anything about CALS admissions? Is it any different from CAS?

Notifications are all at the same time, but each College reviews their own applications. So College of Arts and Sciences applications are reviewed by the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) and students who apply to Colleges or Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) have their applications reviewed by that college. It’s one unique thing about Cornell relative to other schools that have one main admissions office that review/admit the applicants.

Other than that specific admission criteria is on each colleges website as far as test scores, courses they want to see, AP they might take, etc.

9,000 ED applicants this year…

https://admissions.cornell.edu/december-2020

Does anyone know how much more competitive this will make ED? Will these these extra applicants be qualified? Will more people will be accepted ED than previously?

Wow that’s crazy! Last year there were 6615 applicants.

I am sure there are a lot of unqualified applicants as that seems to be the case with people shooting for the moon, but who really knows. I guess it’s just going to be a long 12 days for most people. I would also think that applications in the NY area are up substantially as people don’t want to go to school too far from home and many of Cornell’s colleges have reduced tuition.

This thread is very quiet relative to the past so who knows where people are and where they’re from. We’re from Illinois.

My guess is that many more people applied because it’s test optional this year. Kids that might not have had high enough scores for regular years see a better chance of getting in now.
My daughter is submitting her 35 ACT score. I’m wondering how they’ll factor these in this year and how they’ll compare applicants who submitted/did not submit scores.

I just realized the portal has an option for submitting unofficial score reports. is the common app self-report fine or am I doomed

I think that the Common App self-report is fine but I’m not sure.

Common app is fine. If not, too late now in any case so you’ll never know either way!

Supposedly schools say they will weigh everything else heavier for kids that don’t have scores. So, they better have rock star essays, ECs, grades, rigor and LORs but who the heck really knows? My son also submitted his score. Some of the colleges aren’t even considering them at all.

What I really wonder is how many applications are kids just throwing darts hoping they hit a bullseye and get in? Last year they had just over 6600. I can’t imagine 2400 of equal quality minus test scores are the difference here.

What is your daughter applying for?

She’s applying to Arts and Sciences. How about your son?

Computer Science in Engineering

I still can’t get over the number. When my daughter applied two years ago they had just over 6100 applications and last year 6600.

I think a lot of college counselors may have been wrong or gave bad advice about this admissions cycle or just didn’t know what they were talking about by the fact that there are so many applications all around.

Good luck to her!

Agreed. It’s such a weird year that college counselors probably did encourage a lot of kids to give it a shot.

My daughter applied two years ago, too. She’s in the Hotel School and loves it.
I’m assuming your daughter is at Cornell?

Best of luck to your son, too!
