my son applied ED to the Hotel School… fingers crossed. how is your daughter enjoying it?
my son self reported his test scores and then the school to which he is applying decided to go from optional to “not going to look at them” - but they are there if anyone wants to look.
I think Cornell was one of those schools that extended their ED deadline to Nov 15. That could also explain why they got a record number of applications. Applicants who were not ready by Nov 1 got their act together by Nov 15. Also, if someone was the fence about committing to ED on Nov 1, probably psyched themselves into committing by Nov 15.
She loves it! It’s a smaller school within the larger Cornell community and there’s a sense of community and camaraderie that hotelies feel. They’re initially divided into two blocks and they take all of their classes with their respective blocks and really get to know their classmates. She has learned a ton and has had the opportunity to get to know her professors.
Keep in mind that the Hotel School defers most ED applicants and don’t despair if your son gets deferred. My daughter was deferred and knows of only a handful of classmates that were accepted ED.
Lmk if you have any other questions.
Good luck to your son!
you are correct! Just got an email from the alumni that conducted the interview confirming NOTHING will be submitted this year.
Thank you. I am glad your daughter is enjoying and learning. Had your daughter worked or interned in the hospitality industry prior to applying to Cornell?
We may have questions after the 17th. He is trying to work on his other essays now, the waiting is tough
Fingers crossed.
She had spent a summer interning in the business office of a restaurant chain.
My younger daughter is applying to Arts and Sciences and she’s working on her other essays, too- trying to be hopeful, though.
Does your son have any hospitality experience?
thank you! Somehow that does make me feel a little better!
Do you know some info about ILR? Thanks,
He does. He worked in a kitchen as dishwasher, then moved to prep, then on to the line… he absolutely loved it. He’s a night owl and it fit his personality and sleep traits well. He is very interested in nutrition/health and hopes to combine the two in some way.
Good luck to your applying daughter (and you!) This is my second child applying and it does not get easier the second time around (a global pandemic may have contributed to that though!)
xx
Wow! He has fantastic experience! He would absolutely love the culinary class my daughter is taking along with all the other culinary/food service courses!
Agreed- it doesn’t get any easier the second time around and what seemed like a mysterious process pre-pandemic is now even more unpredictable.
Keep in touch and best of luck to you both on the 17th!
xx
Thank you. Fingers crossed for both of our applicants. Hoping we meet on move in day in September! XX
@mamabear03 and @malba1 Kudos to both your kids. From someone who really doesn’t enjoy cooking in any way shape or form, it always amazes me what some of these kids can cook up and the skills involved. It is no easy feat. And for ones that want to run hotels, etc. Just amazing, especially to want that kind of lifestyle. So great for them!

How do you know most hotelies get deffered?
I don’t know the actual deferral rate, but I’ve known several hotelies through the years (I’m a Cornell alum- Arts and Sciences) and through friends’ kids and my daughter’s classmates at SHA- most of them applied early and were deferred. This is anecdotal, of course, but it’s what I’ve seen in my small sample, and what I’ve heard.
Take it with a grain of salt:)
Good luck!
Of course! Reading that got me worried, I am also applying to SHA ED!
Try not to let it worry you. Hopefully you’ll get in early, and if you get deferred, don’t despair. That may just mean that you’ll need to wait a few more months for an acceptance, but that you’ll ultimately get in:)
Does anyone have information about applying early to the Art major in AAP college? I am an international student anxiously waiting for the result, and I can hardly find any information regarding the early decision about Art major online.
