Cornell Eng, RPI, WPI, UMASS

New to college confidential, although have browsed the forums looking for someone chanced for the same schools, with the same sort of resume. Am entering my Senior year looking at engineering colleges, and at the moment have found four options that seem to suite me best. Looking at applying to

Cornell Engineering ED
WPI EA
RPI
UMASS Lowell (Rolling admission)

Credentials:

SAT 2110 (720 CR, 740 MA, 650 Writing, 10 essay)

SAT II US History 780, Physics 660, Math II 750

GPA 3.5

Rank 18 of 420

My class load has been pretty intense, which I hope will make up for the low GPA
11 H classes thus taken, 1 more next year
3 Honors Accelerated Mathematics classes, spanning from Algebra II to Precalc
AP's
Sophomore:
• AP European History (5)
Junior:
• AP US History (5)
• AP Lit and Comp (4)
Senior:
• AP Calc BC
• AP Stat
• AP Economics
• AP Government
• AP Chem

Also have enrolled part time at community college, and taken an American Lit Class which I earned an A in. Will be taking Physics for Scientists’ and Engineers I and II (Calc based physics) in the coming school year, hopefully earning an A in both.

EC's:
• Boy Scouting since age 6
• Brotherhood Member of the Order of the Arrow (Scoutings NHS)
• Worked as a chapter chief for 1 year, in charge of roughly 250 active youth in the area. This coming year will be Lodge Vice Chief, overseeing 3 chapters with nearly 1000 youth involved
• NHS
• 2 Year Captain Math Team
• 1 year captain Academic Decathelon
• Treasurer Latin Club
• Class Executive Committee (Freshman Sophomore)

Community service
All over the place, probably totaling somewhere around 450 hrs (Eagle Scout project was huge)

Recommendations:
Incredibly good, from adviser of math team and one of my teachers for two years, including AP Calc, Should be very good from guidance, haven't seen it yet

Work Experience:
• Youth Soccer Referee for last 5 years
• Boy Scout Camp Councilor in Discovery (Nature) 2 years

Awards:

• John and Abigail Adams Award
• AP Scholar already
• Eagle Scout (already earned), probably three palm before I turn 18 {Palms are basically longevity awards with few other major requirements}

Am a Mass resident, but I am pretty certain I can get into UMass, Not really considering it beyond the chance to go for free with the commonwealth scholarship. A few more questions about RPI and WPI, but still pretty sure I will be ok. I understand fully that Cornell is a stretch, but I am still hopeful. The 660 in Physics is going to hurt, but I hope to retake it and Math II looking for higher scores, along with the SAT Reasoning. I think I may not have diversified quite enough in EC’s to feel comfortable with that list, I have been very scouting oriented.

If anyone has any other recommendations I would be happy to take them. For that I think the major thing that needs to be known is that I am looking to be a ChemE, and have done a good amount of research into which schools I think will best fit me.

I think you’re a shoo in for all the schools except Cornell, which is probably a reach for you only b/c your GPA and rank are not that high. Also, if you’re interested in engineering, look into Carnegie Mellon and Purdue-they have really good engineering programs and they seem like matches for you.

thank you, I have looked at CMU, but purdue has not really crossed my mind. The only issue I see is Indiana, it is quite a haul from Mass with the good engineering programs in the area already.

I forgot to put in one thing that might add a little weight to The application at Cornell. I am a Member of my high schools “Classical Academy”, a program that was started in my year of entrance into high school. They attempt to give us a preemptive Liberal Arts Education. So I was actually taking harder classes without any weight into my GPA. It is no excuse, but the liberal arts education, especially in a private group inside a public high school that was incredibly selective, might play a little to my advantage

Cornell would be like high match
RPI would be match
WPI is like match / safety
UMass = safety…
