i know that cornell engineering has the reputation to attract a lot of top-notch internship opportunities, but i was wondering, could i possibly find internships for companies or engineering firms out in southern california??? i'm really interested in coming back to southern california (my home) over my summers, but i wanna prepare myself for grad school and i really want to do some interning... is that common to see, to get an internship from around where you live? if someone could explain the internship process to me, that would be greatly appreciated

thanks

Yes the recruiters are from all across the country, and you should have a good shot at getting a job in SoCal. People in SoCal will still know Cornell is a top school, and that will help you out.

Internships - beware that this is from a few years back...

1999: If you were a warm body you could get interships
2000: Still a banner year
2001-2002: Dot-bomb. Things are slooooooow. 2002 is my junior year - the one where I actually want to get an internship. I decide to forgo the co-op plan and go solo. I landed a nice internship near my hometown in NY, and the Cornell name helped me do this. A few students get co-op offers recinded by a big name company (cough Hewlett-Packard).
2003: Low year for jobs/internships. Many go to grad school.
2004: Things pick up. Students have good job offers across the country.

There is always a big job fair in the fall. At these fairs you can submit resumes for jobs/internships, it's all treated the same. It's debatable as to how effective the job fair is. There is also an online system where you submit resumes for interviews. This is more effective, and you will pick up a few interviews just by applying. The nice thing is that the companies are there to recruit you, and the big companies have offices everywhere, like SoCal.

Here's a link that gives some geographical data for Cornell hires.
