Cornell Fraternity and Sorority Rankings 2009

what about the asian american interest frats like Pi Delta Psi? why r they not on the list.

There isn’t much interaction between Panhellenic sororities and MGLC sororities. Not as if there is bad blood or anything but there isn’t much interaction outside of Greek Week and the tri-council boards. The IFC, Panhellenic, and MGLC systems are all run completely different and separately of each other.

To answer some of the questions above, I have decided to put in my own two cents on Greek life, mainly on the sorority side and the rushing aspect. Fist of all, since most people who are new to Cornell always wonder about the social life they may encounter here, the Greek system, in my opinion, is a great way to meet new people. It is a great social scene, yet sometimes, if I must say used incorrectly, leads to the negative stereotypes of the system.

Most girls I know who rushed and joined sororities usually have many positive things to say about their sororities. That being said, there are always many exceptions. My advice is that if you are interested in Greek life or just want to see how it is, go through rush because you never know what you are going to miss out on.

All of that being said, my take on the question above asking about the chances of getting into a sorority based on financial matters, I would say to some degree yes to some of the sororities. Then again, it all amounts to your daughter’s degree of comfortableness at a sorority during rush. Being rich or not rich is not a huge deal. Most of the time, sororities are looking for nice girls that match the personalities of each sorority.

Here’s my take on the sororities (not in any particular order). To be fair, I will not say if I am in a sorority or not, but I will say that I went through rush and that I know many girls who are in the different sororities. These, again, are only generalizations and can not be taken too seriously. This is only hopefully a helpful guide to those who are wondering.

Kappa Alpha Theta: These girls are very much into sisterhood and have a lot of pride for their sorority. Many girls fall in love with this sorority during rush. Known for being the nice girls. However, they are also known as ‘fake nice’ and some say that put on a show during rush. All in all, they have some of the most attractive girls, especially with one of the best-looking pledge classes this year. Their sorority house is strategically placed on West campus and has a beautiful looking house.

Kappa Kappa Gamma: This house is historically known for being very hot. However, this comes to a downside when some people see them as trashy and way too wild. During rush, their tendency for partying and wild/fun personalities is quickly seen. By far, had one of the funniest skits and showed their famed fun side. Known to have very little sisterhood and a lot of drama. They have been slipping a little downhill recently. Their house also has a great location on campus, but the house’s exterior is not very attractive and looks like a surrounding program house.

Delta Gamma: This house has historically very attractive girls. Mostly all of them are from rich families. During rush, this house had very mixed feelings. Some of the girls are genuinely very nice, while others fit in with their common stereotype of being very stuck up, snobby, and full of themselves. This house constantly likes to be known and dubs themselves as the best, and this draws some disfavor from the other houses. Recently, however, this house has taken a dive in reputation, and the recent pledge class is not that great. They have a great house with a beautiful interior. The rooms, however, seem a little small.

Alpha Phi: This house has a great reputation for also being very nice. However, some people say that they are trophy wives and boring to hang out with. This house seems to attract pretty girls, some awkward and some very nice. The house seems to be moving up in reputation and becoming a very strong house. These girls are strong in sisterhood and very into competition and winning. During rush, this house was one of the three houses many people seemed to like, along with Theta and Pi Phi. Their house has a beautiful exterior, and the interior is also gorgeous too. The decorations during rush show the girly personalities of the house.

Pi Beta Phi: Historically, has been known as the athletic house. However, this is a common misconception. This house has their fair share of varsity athletes, but their recent pledge classes have attracted a great number of girls who are not on sports teams. During rush, this house was well-received. Most girls loved the friendly and down-to-earth nature of the house. The girls are very cute, attractive, and have a good sisterhood. This house is more low key; don’t hear many bad things about them. The house that they live in is gorgeous on the outside and in the inside. The downside is the location of their house, which is located neat the veri side of campus.

Sigma Delta Tau: This house was first started at Cornell. The house is now a very Jewish house with some diversity. Most come from the Northeast, with a majority from Long Island and the New York/New Jersey area. During rush, this house had mixed feelings. You either liked it or disliked it. The house has a slightly bad reputation for being a little trashy, thought most people I know in this house are generally sweet. The house is located far off in North campus, very far away from the main Cornell campus. The house looks a little weird from the outside, and the house is oddly segmented into parts added onto the original house. The good thing is they have a bus stop right in fron of their house.

Tri-Delta: This house has a lot of girls that like to party and have fun. The house is average in looks, with some attractive girls and some unattractive ones. They are historically known for being morally lax, and their pledge classes always draw a few of the same personalities. During rush, this house fades into the background at the beginning compared to the others, but as the week goes on, more people begin to like it more. The house has a good location near delta gamma and kappa delta. The house looks big from the outside, but this does not seem so inside. The downstairs is nice, but the upstairs rooms are very small and have little space.

Alpha Epsilon Phi: This house is also known to have a lot of Jewish people for the New York/New Jersey area. A little less Jappy than SDT. When here for rush, noticed that there are very few blondes, mostly brunettes. Do not know much about this house. The outside appearance of this house does not look very good. The house does not look like it is in good condition, and the inside looks old.

Alpha Chi Omega: This house is the third house that is known to be very jewish. This house has some very nice girls, yet are not known for their good looks. Some of the girls during rush were slightly awkward, but very friendly. The house has beautiful steps leading up to the house, and it has large windows in one of the rooms that allows great sunlight. The downstairs is very small though.

Kappa Delta: This house has very sweet girls. They sadly lack in the looks department and have a fair share of some awkward girls. In general though, they are all very friendly and extremely nice. They are great girls to know and talk to. The house has a good location, but the house does not look in good condition.

Alpha Xi Delta: This house has some nice girls too, but also has a fair share of different girls. Some are slightly awkward, but I know several people in recent pledge class who are very nice. The house looks very different. Not a typical sorority house look. Other than that, do not know much else to say about them.

Again, I hope this helps you have some idea of the different houses. These are only my views from experience and from others. All the houses have great girls and are great in their own ways!

oh and common knowledge that AZD is taking AOpi’s old house. GREAT for AZD because I know they were not very popular in rush at all.

AZD’s current house was being rented and now will be rented by the newest sorority on campus which, is the many rumors are true, is Chi Omega

dande - Where did you get the information about ChiO coming to campus?

a sister on panhel

false. Chi O is one possible house along with one or two others. Each house first has to do a presentation before Panhel. Panhel is only going to bring one new house to campus. It will happen either this year or the 2010-2011 school year. Panhel is doing fine now with 11 chapters. Yeah some pledge classes are getting 47 members but some had 37 members (less than this years quota of 45 per chapter).

Which frats haze the hardest. Not that I am really concerned about it too much but it would be nice to know before I rush.

A lot of frats do minor hazing, nothing too serious. Never really heard of any major hazing unless you count case races

there are rumors about every frat and then there are really bad rumors about some frats. take them with a grain of salt. plus, you don’t have to do anything you don’t want to. stand up for your rights!

(although, no offense, why do i get the sense that those who join certain frats aren’t exactly the type to not do something if everyone else is doing it/has done it…?)

Most people would say that Chi Psi has the worst hazing, if you know people in the frat and have heard stories then you know why. Cornell has a very strict anti-hazing policy, so hazing in general has gone down in recent years. Dont let hazing deter you from pledging, nothing that you do during Cornell fraternity hazing is that bad anymore. Some pledging events are actually fun/bonding type activities. Pledging is the best time of your life you never want to have again.

Incidents involving hazing are reported at [Hazing at Cornell: Campus Violations](http://www.hazing.cornell.edu/incidents/hazingBlotter.html)

Enough about hazing. Some frats haze, some don’t, and if they do its usually not THAT bad (there are exceptions). Nuff said. I appreciate the constructive criticism that some people were giving and if any knowledgeable Cornell people involved in the Greek scene think that some of the stuff is inaccurate then add your two cents. If any incoming freshman have questions about any individual houses or rushing or anything else in general feel free to post or pm.

What are some of the “hazing” activities someone might encounter? I’m considering pledging, and I’m all for the initation aspect, but I’m not going to 100% humiliate myself or put myself in danger for it.

Hey ZFanatic. Everyone has those kind of worries when they are thinking about pledging. None of the fraternities on Cornell’s campus put their pledges in real danger and humiliation is limited because fraternities are scared to make hazing public b/c they will get exposed. Most of the ‘hazing’ activities are really team building type things with a twist. The twist will often not be very fun, like being trapped in a room with your pledge class, some food and some water for an entire weekend (most fraternities do some form of this). The pledge events have a purpose, and will make you unbelievably tight with your pledge brothers. You will go into the process with some friends and you will come out with a pledge class full of the best and closest friends you will ever make.

ZFanatic, Are you an incoming freshman?

dont worry, youll know going into a frat’s pledging process if you’re going to get hazed a lot. the brothers will make sure anyone theyre seriously considering during rush knows what theyre getting into so they don’t end up with a pledge class that doesnt want to do things and depledges or reports them. they want a pc that will go along with it and has a positive mindset about it (ie wants to build the community, doesnt mind being “toughened up” etc). all the guys i knew who pledged houses that haze said from the beginning that they knew what they were in for, and usually their expectations were worse than what they actually had to do.

I agree with CB on that one.

Yeah, I am an incoming freshmen.

I was wondering, how do legacies at Cornell work? My dad was in a fraternity when he was in college, and they have a chapter at Cornell. Does that count? Or does it have to be the same school? If it does, what does being a legacy do for you?

I mean I wouldn’t join a house just because I was a legacy, but if I like it then why not.

I’m not in a frat but I’m assuming that having a “frat legacy” won’t hurt when the bids are handed out.

It wont count for anything if he was in a chapter at another university
