Cornell Housing & Dinning FAQs

I've used the search feature but there doesn't seem to be anything worthwhile vis-a-vis Cornell housing. So please use this thread to post any and all information as it pertains to Cornell housing and housing

If I attend Cornell, I'm really interested living in the West Campus Housing System. Would anyone kindly shed some light on this? Specially, has anyone lived in Alice Cook?

Additionally, does anyone have any experience living in a co-op?

Finally, where's the best place to eat and what's the deal with Wegman's?

TIA.

How is a list of questions that have never been asked before/ can’t be found using the search function an FAQ list?

Anyway, I don’t know what it’s like living on West/Co-op, I live off-campus.

Wegman’s is a pretty nice grocery store. All the produce is of good quality and the prices are fair. The pasta and sandwich places, and ready-to-eat buffets are also very good for a quick meal. The only issue is getting there. If you don’t have a car, you will probably take a bus to most places far off campus. I personally have never used the TCAT to get down in that area of Ithaca, but I heard the route requires hours and multiple transfers which are offset and require awkward amounts of waiting time.

The route to Wegmans is a one-bus trip that involves getting on a bus which changes number halfway through the route and loops once around the commons before going downtown. It still takes around 50 minutes for the TCAT to get there though.

@somni: Discussion and questions leading to the sharing of information that may answer frequently asked questions? Isn’t that function of message boards?

If you are arriving at Cornell as a freshman (not clear from your post) you cannot live on West Campus. All the freshmen live on North Campus. Balch is all women, very nice, old in a charming way. Dickson is mostly singles. Court Mews Bauer are new and shiny with A/C. Donlon is mostly doubles, less charming, but known for being social. The high rises are suites. The rooms are nice, but you can feel isolated in your suite which doesn’t connect to other suites. The townhouses are farthest away and offer apt. style living.

You get to pick single/double/triple but not your dorm, except I think if you’re a woman you can choose Balch. You can also specify a program house.

After freshman year if you want to stay on campus you enter the housing lottery and pick the best option when your number comes up.

And yes, the Cornell website has far more comprehensive information.
