Housing and Food

How are the dorms at Cornell and how is the food?

The dorms vary. You can read different descriptions here:

[Housing - First Year Students](<a href=“Residential Life | Student & Campus Life | Cornell University”>http://www.campuslife.cornell.edu/campuslife/housing/first-year-students.cfm)

I personally love the food here. There’s a decent variety and it all usually tastes good lol, and even though it may get a bit repetitive at times, it’s wayyyyyyy better than most other college dining. Your meal plan also includes Big Red Bucks (BRBs) - which are separate from your dining hall meals and function like regular cash - and can be used in numerous cafes and eateries. So if you ever want to get away from the dining halls, you can always use your BRBs to grab a sandwich, sushi, salads, pastries, various drinks (coffee, bubble tea, etc), or whatever. And plus there are all the restaurants in C-town! Haha so in short…I’m really satisfied with the food here, and I think it made a really big difference in terms of how quickly I adjusted to college life.

yeah, the dorms definitely vary. There’s no telling to what you’ll get. I’m in Balch, and while the rooms are huge, it’s pretty socially dead (at least my floor and unit).

I’ll second countryangel-- the food is amazing! It’s usually better than what I ate at home.
There are so many options; I haven’t even been to half to places yet.

Like the previous posters, the dorms here vary. I live in Clara Dickson; it is old, has no AC, but is otherwise pretty good. It was pretty quiet the first few days in my hall, but now it has livened up quite nicely.

The food here is excellent.

circumlocution2, I’m also in Balch! North Balch, Unit 1. I LOVE how much space we have in our rooms…my single is probable even larger than a usual double. While it’s true that Balch isn’t as social as other dorms, the people who do come out of their rooms are really fun, and the social life is really just what you make of it. In fact, most of my closest friends are in Balch. I also like that I don’t have to schlep all the way to the library for a quiet place to study, and it’s pretty easy to sleep here too.

If you’re looking for something more social, you’ll probably like Donlon better. (Balch is also all-girls).

I’m enjoying Donlon. I’m lucky though, I have a single and it’s quite large. It is pretty noisy though. People running around slamming doors and yelling at 4 am… But it doesn’t bother me too much. Better than living in a morgue, haha. It’s also in a great location. Smack dab in the middle of north campus, right next to RPCC. Only Jameson is closer, but they’re practically touching. Donlon is a little old, but I mean it’s certainly not decrepit by any stretch of the imagination. My only qualm is the fact that there’s no ovehead lighting… I brought two lamps with me, and combined with the lamp they supplied, it’s still kind of dark. Not a huge deal though.

The food’s good. Not like what we make back home, southern food is better than anything, but it’s definitely good for cafeteria buffet food. Some places are better than others too. For example, Okenshields sucks.

If you ever get into the Low Rises 6,7,8 (Ujamma) ,9 (Jam),10 (International)
You’re screwed. The floors are designed in a way that you can’t meet more than 7 people without having to walk around corners to meet someone else.

The food in half the places are awesome all the time.
The others varies in the week and by time.
