I think I'd like a job 1st semester as a freshman. I'm considering either being a secretary or a tutor / course assistant for the physics or math department. (yes, i'm qualified to tutor intro physics / intro stats / intro calc) They're only 4-8 hrs a week, so they seem reasonable. Would that be a good idea?

Also, I'm an Engineering major. What other jobs do you think would be good / relevant for my major?

I don’t really know what you mean by Tutor, but Teaching Assistant requires the professor’s recommendation. Usually this means, you must have taken the course and received an A.

Other things you may want to get into is research. In the beginning you’ll be basically be the lab slave but eventually you work your way up the food chain. But more importantly, you’ll be learning a lot. Research sometimes pays, sometimes is volunteer, and sometimes is credit based.

I think it’s okay. I know one person who is also doing tutoring, but that’s because she loves to teach. So, you might have a different preference.

Being a tutor, however, is not the same as being a course assistant. If you are referring to the AEW instructors, then I think it’s pretty awesome. I, however, don’t know your schedule. So, can’t say it’s a good idea or not.

As a freshman tutoring job is hard to get, IMHO. Try library or food services. My suggestion would be to take time adjust in the first semester and try for second semester onwards.

Check the job listings on the Cornell student site. My child worked at one of the libraries and found it to be an excellent first semester freshman job - decent money, flexibility and extra hours if he needed them. Also the job, surprisingly, provided a sense of structure while navigating such a big campus. Good luck!
