Cornell no longer offers EMT

Cornell Ends Instruction in Emergency Services | The Cornell Daily Sun
I just saw this article and I have to say that I personally am very disappointed at the elimination of this class. If I end up going to Cornell that was one of the classes I definitely want to take, both for the experience and to see whether or not I truly want to go into medicine. I was wondering if anyone on here knows if there is any other way to become a certified EMT in the area, and if I would be able to get credit for getting certified elsewhere?

I’m not personally involved with EMS, so I can’t tell you the time commitment. I would love to get involved, but don’t want to spend too many hours doing shifts (I have lots of work…!!!)

But if anyone does know more about EMS (the hours, first aid training…etc), feel free to share.

I would not use EMT experience as a gauge of what medicine is like.

I realize it’s not like being a doctor, what I meant was the whole “someone’s dying/ emergency situation” and knowing if I could handle doing that for a living.

@misterpresident, thanks, that looks really helpful and although you wouldn’t get the chance to become an EMT I could still do some good volunteer work.

To me, it never made much sense to pay extra money to take an EMT class at Cornell when you can do it for much cheaper at a community college. You’re also paying over $100 a day to be at Cornell. I don’t understand why you would waste so much time taking an EMT class that you can just take during the summer.

Same here. The Cornell EMT course was ridiculously over-priced. As an undergrad, I took the course at home over the summer for a small fraction of what Cornell was charging.

This is true in New Jersey (I’m not sure about NY), but if you’re planning on volunteering you can go to the ambulance corps. you are planning on joining and get a waiver to take the course for free. That’s how I did it.
