I got accepted into both schools and I don't know which one to choose. I live in New York, so going to Cornell would be ideal when traveling home however, I want to study to political science and being in Washington seems like the place to be.

Any advice?

(I want to double major in political science and economics with a minor in music.)

IIRC it doesn’t take that much longer to get from DC to NYC than from Ithaca to NYC. In theory, anyway. Admittedly traffic thru DC and Baltimore, and then getting through a bridge or tunnel into NYC, can make the trip a lot longer, and unpredictable. One can even take Amtrak from Penn Station to DC, though it’s expensive.

Suggest check out the Cornell in Washington program. Though that’s not the same as being there all the time.

My D2 started out attending college in a big city. She found that the presence of the city detracted from the vitality of the college experience. I don’t know whether Georgetown would be the same. But Cornell offers the prototypical campus-focused college experience, and D2 preferred it there.

You can’t go wrong with either school. As stated in both posts, a big difference is the location of the schools. And I agree that getting from DC to NYC is not an issue at all (you can take the very cheap Megabus/Bolt buses or the expensive and slightly faster Amtrak). Georgetown is in a great area in DC and Cornell is a huge campus upstate.

In general ,DC seems to be a great location for political science,. Personally, I went to a city school and loved it but you need to think about which school and environment is most appealing to you… Also consider other differences between the schools (ex. do you prefer Jesuit, private? which size school suits you best? do you care about Greek life? sports? having a large core curriculum?) If the money is different with each school that can be a factor as well (ex. if you are in a state supported school at Cornell).

In the end you have two amazing choices. Go to the school where you feel you’d be happiest.
