Cornell prelims

Anybody know about, or have taken the CS 100M (intro to programming in Matlab and Java) exam? I've heard it was a comple b&tch and that it is uncurved.

With my amount of CS knowledge so far, I'm hoping for a D-

aww don't let the stress get to you too much. just keep practicing and stuff. I dropped 100J haha, but still :) I have my first prelim tuesday (calc) fun. i just try and remember that everyone else is going through the exact same thing, and that relaxes me a lot. Are you a frosh too?

CS100M is the easiest class by far I've taken at cornell. I did the projects in my sleep, killed all the tests by 1-2 standard deviations, and got an A+ with little effort. While it is technically uncurved, they help you out a lot by doing things like dropping your lowest project score and weighting your lowest prelim score 50% less. Granted, I had several years of CS experience in high school, but being successful in CS is more about having the ability to think in an analytical manner and understand logic. Problem solving is the hard part; translating your solutions to the problems into code is simple. Of course, experience never hurts.

Funny you should post this. I just took the CS 100M test (NO prior experience) and am feeling pretty ok about it. I can recall getting one question wrong, but I am pretty confident about my code. It was no cakewalk, though.

perro406, congrats on your success with the course, but I mean, most science majors are problem solving. You underestimate the knowledge you gained from "several years of CS" you had in high school. The class is not easy.

I found the projects to be challenging, but manable with the right amount of time, attitude, and help when necessary. (10/10 on both so far :))

perro406: My grading rubrick says:

92-100 A-, A, A+
80-88 B-, B, B+
65-76 C-, C, C+

What is the exact breakup? What happened to 89-91, etc? Did you ace everything to get that A+?

Also, are the exams themselves curved? What is meant by "After assigning your initial letter grade based on your overall numeric score, we might raise your grade if you have earned sufficient bonus points." I never saw any of these bonus points!

Ameechee. You in the 9ish or 11:15 lecture? Just wondering.

Idk, a lot of ppl that i knew never took programming before and thought it was easy. Those grades are the same as they were when i took the class. If you put a lot of time into the projects you will learn the most. And yeah to get an A+ i pretty much aced everything. This included something i never thought i'd see at cornell: 100% on a prelim. :D
