Cornell RD Class of 2023 Discussion Thread

For everyone that I see complaining about overall cost and “little” financial aid with a net of $25-30K / yr, just remember that some of us will be paying the full $75k per year being technically “punished” for living for years well below our means with the only intention of saving for college…So enjoy your savings…

@Shelikesmath , my daughter also got “recruited” into the Prefreshman Summer Program with excellent SAT scores and many AP courses in Math, Physics…etc… I researched on it and I am starting to believe that currently it is more of a minority leadership program than an academic program.

@BlueAxis please remember that those paying less may have lived just as frugally as you have. You have no reason to know otherwise. My daughter has a friend who qualifies for app waivers, so I am sure will be paying much less than $25k a year if she decides to attend Cornell. But I also know that whatever amount she does have to pay will be painful for her family and likely require them to borrow money on their home.

Finances are a sensitive thing and casting negative judgements on families when you don’t know their backgrounds is just wrong.

So there’s no way Cornell will match Emory? The difference in the packages is substantial, almost 20k per year more from Emory, and they offered everything in grants instead of loans

Can any of you tell me what you know about Prefreshman Summer Program? Is it mandatory or optional or both? Is it good for the freshman academic? thank you for your explanation in advance

@Trekko10 Depends on what you wanna gain out of it. THat matters more than the attended name college.

@Trekko10 I believe whether it’s mandatory or optional may depend on how your letter was worded. If you are unsure about your circumstance, you may want to contact admissions and ask them. Don’t worry, they won’t rescind your offer because you asked about it!

I do know some people don’t have a choice if they want to attend Cornell, because I’ve read that before here on CC in old threads and on reddit. I don’t know much else, maybe someone else will.

@stressed2019 you would need to contact Cornell’s FA office to get that answer. If all of Emory’s offer is need based, maybe? If any of it is merit than it’s unlikely IMO. But none of us are FA officers so we can’t say for sure. If you don’t ask, you will always wonder.

If my family had a certain EFC and in a perfect world, the income stayed the same as the previous year, if 2 additional siblings enter college, does the EFC from last year (which would be the same as last year) cut in 3 (one for each child in college)?

@Kbat11700 did you applied for financial aid that year

My daughter was accepted to the College of Engineering, but there was no mention of a Prefreshman Summer Program. Should we look into this?

@Shrink66 I don’t think you can just sign up for it.
“Students are either required or invited to participate as part of their admission decision to attend Cornell.”

@mbuchanan1 thats correct.

Details are in mailed physical packages or as links on portal/letters (pdfs)

We went to admitted student event on Monday. The campus was jaw droppingly beautiful but OMG the weather was horrible. Kid was unfazed. Did anyone else go? As a parent I’m nervous about how crazy hard people say the engineering program is. After going through the app process and getting in will they still try to flunk kids out? I was too chicken to ask this in an open session?

@TheGuy1 glad to see you back, so Congratulations is in order!

@BigApple2018 Lol thanks! Hope the rest Cornell’s well for you!!!

@negsplits18 Idk about the former, but regarding the engg program, they dont try and flunk kids, cornell engg is hard since its well renowned for a reason, and grading is done in most cases by curving such that most get a C at least.

They dont try and flunk kids, but set the papers and psets in such a way that challenges all aspects of skills and concepts to be developed or known. Hence the difficulty varies by student, but a very very failing performance might result in expulsion of sorts. The rest is okay. Below a D is a fail.

@negsplits18 – So sorry to hear the weather was bad. Sounds like you experienced the lovely weather condition known as Ithacating. Temps can go from 70 to 40 overnight at this time of year.

If you are truly concerned, you can call and speak with someone in Engineering. There is a great deal of help available to students…prof & TA office hours, study groups, etc. Some students will fail, however, they are not immediately kicked out. I think this varies across colleges, but a student may be placed on academic probation if GPA falls below a specified level.

Congrats!

@CT1417 Also, I think the specified level on the 4.0 scale is less than 2.5 by an educated guess

@TheGuy1 – the link I provided above outlines the semester GPA, cumulative GPA, and Engineering-specific grade requirements.
