Okay, so currently I am a sophmore and am considering going to Cornell, but my main question is about sports. I run a lot , but am really short ( lol...idk why I'm putting this, but mainly because I believe that my height affects my running speed. sigh) Anyways, I was wondering if anyone knew of how I can get into the official cross country sports team? The reason why I ask is because our school had cross country ONE year.. lol.. and afterwards I continued to run, and right now I am trying to increase my time by training at the gym.. time right now is bad I guess =/. (24 minutes for a 5k sigh..but that was the record for just one which was AFTER our SOCCER CHAMPIONSHIP in which I played the whole game.. ). I'm hoping to be able to get down to 20 by next year and then trim it down to 19 or 18. Do any of you think that I have a chance of making it into their team if I contact the coach next year?

Im only in high school but id guess u need to be able to arouund 17 minutes for an XC 5k and slightly faster for one on the track.

Do you think it would be possible to decrease my time over two years if I pushed myself?
The reason I ask is that i am willing to push myself all the way, and I mean it. I already I saw a one minute time increase already in two months. =D

I'm a girl btw.

O nvm, u dont need 17 minutes then. I have no idea wat u woudl need ot make the women's team. But yes u definitely coudl improve in two years.

^ haha. I knew 17 minutes was a little bit too short.. b/c I know guys run that fast. Although, there was a girl in Rice U who runs 17 sometime for a 5k.

I like to look at results from meets at the college to get an idea for how fast I'd have to be to run there. Here's Cornell's Women's XC:

It looks like you might have a shot of running there if you can get down around/below 20. If you're in doubt, I'm sure that there's a coach there who you can talk to, and since you don't have an XC team anymore, maybe he/she can give you some workouts to do.

Yeah. ^ I was thinking of that.. and it really sucks that we dont have cross country anymore. =/. Right now, I'm supposed to run four times a week with mixed up routines.
Thanks for the support and the link. =D

bump(10char)

Hey, I don't know about running at Cornell... BUT I do know some stuff about running in general!

I have 3 success stories to share!

1.) Renuka... Indian girl, 5'0" (proving that height does NOT matter). She's one of my best friends. She had a back brace from 7th to 8th grade. Worked really hard and was captain for XC and Track Junior and Senior year. She ran a 12 minute mile in middle school, but now she runs a 1500m on track 5.08, best 3k on track 11.18, 3.2 xcountry 12.00... Has a meet record for an annual track meet in singapore. pretty sweet, if i do say so myself! :)

2.) Ryan. he's caucasian. He was also pretty short 5'10" if i remember correctly. he used to smoke but quit after he joined xcountry. He ran a 17min42sec 5k on the track. He's running at college now. :) He was a senior when I was a freshman, so i don't really know much about him other than this...

3.) Winnie. Asian friend of mine. about 5'4"... was REALLY REALLY REALLY REALLY slow... not even "back of the (mid/fast) pack", but more like tied for dead last... Anyway... she ran every other day for an hour and came back for xcountry season in AMAZING shape. her 3k xcountry times are about 40 seconds behind renuka's (the indian girl) (no exact times, because she only ran xcountry this year, and at each turf, she would have varying times but always 30-60 sec behind Renuka.

So yea.... from a purely RUNNING point of view, you CAN drop your times dramatically.

Ugh join the short club. I'm now 5'8 but was shorter in the early years in highschool and I was really into hurdles. I HATED tall kids!!! WAT JERKS! lol

chisquared: Thanks for all of those stories! They are definitely encouragine. =] I will try and remember them.
Figgy: lol. Well, I just wish I was 5'4 atleast. haha
