Cornell Subject Tests?

Hey everyone! I decided to make an account because this has been on my mind for awhile. I plan on applying to Cornell ED, and I’m getting my application ready at the moment. I realize that Cornell does not participate in score choice, thus I must submit ALL SAT II subject test scores. I never took the SAT I, however I took 5 subject tests, and I plan on submitting both my ACT scores. I have no problem submitting my ACT scores, since it shows an improvement of 6 points from sophomore year to junior year, but I’m not entirely proud of some of my subject test scores. While I have a 780 US History test from 2016, a 710 Bio M test from 2015, and a 750 Bio M test taken a month after the first Bio test, I took two literature tests the same time I took both bio tests. I didn’t plan on doing well on literature since I didn’t study, but I figured that if I somehow managed to do well I wouldn’t have had to take the US History test which I took a year after the other tests. I got a 610 on BOTH of the tests, unfortunately. I know that Cornell and other universities claim they only look at the highest scores, they certainly ask for all scores for a reason, and I fear this might hurt me because I showed no improvement in Literature, even with such a poor score. Will this have any affect? I don’t plan on simply excluding them because I’m not lacking in integrity, but I don’t want this to be a detriment either. Thank you to everyone who responds, and I’m sorry I didn’t organize this mess into concise paragraphs!!

Glad you’re not thinking of trying to pull a fast one. No one will know with certainty how Cornell will view those scores. Make sure you have a safety you can afford and would be happy to attend.

I’ve been told by 2 adcoms here that they consider your top 2 scores and any abnormally low scores. I’m not sure what the cutoff for “abnormally low” is, but 610 is probably above that threshold.

Also, never exclude scores in your application if they are required. If Cornell finds out, you will (most likely) get immediately expelled. If they are a detriment, so be it. There’s nothing you can do about it at this point. Just submit your application and relax

I agree with the above post about the 610 being not “abnormally low”. While it is below the average, as long as you’re not a literature major it shouldn’t be too much of an issue. As long as your other stats are good, those two subject test scores won’t break you, I should hope. Good luck!

At some point you just need to take the college at their word. What else can you really do?

I can’t speak for Cornell admissions, but at my peer college, there are little elves (actually, they’re usually work-study students) who prep the applications and prepare a cover sheet. If the college asks for 2 subject tests, most like only the top two will appear on the cover sheet. Yes, the others will be part of the overall packet, but an AO will likely not pay too much attention to it. Your other scores are more than fine. Good luck.

Thank you all so much, I truly appreciate all of your responses!
