Cornell Transfer

Hey guys, I was just curious as to your personal experiences with the transfer process. I'm a bit nervous about applying, but cornell is the most ideal university i've ever encountered (for me personally, that is).

I'm currently completeing my 3rd semester at UNC Charlotte, however (according to credit hours) I'm a second semester junior. I'm triple majoring in English, International Affairs, and Russian, and i'm contemplating minoring in Philosophy. My gpa freshman year was 3.8 (because of a stupid UNCC required earth science class.. has NOTHING to do with my majors. i've aced every class for my majors), and i'm definitely going to have a 4.0 this semester (i'm taking 20 credit hours and i work 2 jobs part time totaling 44 hours a week. don't ask how i manage, because i simply do not know). i also participate in the English Learning Community (a group of nerdy English majors) and have become very close with my department chair and many professors (and i am in a bunch of honor societies like golden key, etc. which i know probably make no difference). I got 1st place in the entire undergraduate english dept for an essay i wrote during my 1st semester freshman year. My first 2 years of high school were not exceptional, to put it mildly, due to the sudden death of my grandfather and my mother's health. however, i did very well junior and senior year (especially senior year) and got 5's on every AP exam i took that year. 2100 on sat's (800 writing, 720 reading and 580 math. should i retake the exam before transferring?) i also took classes at community college at night while i was in high school, which is why i'm so ahead in credits.
I had to stay home in Charlotte, NC for a couple of years due to my family's financial situation, but now that it has improved, i think i am absolutely ready to open my mind up once again and feel like a part of an intellectual community. however, i'm still nervous about applying. very nervous in fact. and every time i sit down to write my "why cornell" essay, i draw a blank. i dont want to come off sounding like a victim, but i really do think i've done a hell of a job working 45 hours a week and having a 4.0 this semester
i'm going to go for a masters in international affairs, then join the peace corps for 2 yrs, and then (eventually) law school.

so.. any thoughts? should i stop being so paranoid? and if you were in my position, what schools would you consider applying to?

are you going to apply to ILR? Whatever you do don't apply to the college of arts and sciences, at least I wouldn't as it is VERY competitive.

well.. considering all three of my majors are arts and sciences majors.. i will be applying to CAS.

so you're telling me it's not even WORTH applying? ok..

well, i'm applying anyway. i'm not afraid of competition. in fact, it only increases my appetite for greater success.

The arts and sciences have an 8% chance of being admitted (that was their acceptance rate). Now you know your chances. I would not recommend applying to ilr or any other college within cornell either, since all of your courses are obviously not within the course range of business (ilr) or biology (human ecology) or even hotel administration, that would be an automatic rejection.

That requirement from Human Ecology and CALS are REDICULIOUS. One public speaking course? Two academic writing?

What's ridiculous about it? That's pretty much bog-standard lower-division work. The CSUs and UCs all have similar requirements.

That's a good attitude, just_breathe, but be sure you apply to some other schools as well, because an 8 out of 100 probability is... well, not great.

CAS is 13% now. Im applying CAS as well

why would he apply to ilr...

Because he is interested in law school and from what I understand a lot of ILR majors end up going to law school.

btw ILR is not business, whoever said that, the business major is in CALS.

ILR is not business, but it is very much business-related.

well as hard as cas is, i think hes a perfect fit

haha, thank you for your confidence in me.
i actually had a long discussion with my advisor today, and i feel much more confident in my decision to apply. i'm also going to apply to georgetown, nyu, u chicago, and unc chapel hill as my safety school. we'll see what happens. i'll post my essays on here as soon as they write themselves.

and although i am interested in law school, i'm not ruling out the possibility of getting one or more doctorate degrees instead. i'd love to work for the UN or as an ambassador.

oh.. on a side note: i'm a 'she' :)

your clearly driven so forth, but why major in all those things? I think its easier to get into a program at a top school by zeroing in on one thing you like and going for it. I think when you "consider" a million things it weakens your chances as most schools are kinda specific in terms of transfers.

Good luck though!

thats another problem of mine. i CANNOT choose between my three majors at all. i've tried countless times to drop even one, and i just simply will not feel satisfied in school unless i am studying russian literature, english applied linguistics and literature, and international affairs. honestly i love all three of my majors. basically, i'm going to be in college... forever.

well youll definitely need to narrow it down! you just dont have enough hours in the day haha
im from charlotte too, well actually mooresville, but im guessing you were in the cms district?

Mooresville...or Morrisville? Wait..never...I'm thinking Raleigh. I'm from Cary. lol.

oh geez who isnt from cary.. (a few of my friends at college are)

are you from NC polska?

Hey, Carys the place! Besides..your college friends are probably lying. A lot of people say their from Cary just to say it...haha.

nah, i'm sticking to all my majors through and through. i figure if i can do it while working full time and maintaining a 4.0, it's not worth dropping.
and no, i lived in california until my senior year of high school, so i actually attended LAUSD system for 11 years. i did my senior year here at a CMS school.
