Cornell University/Calculus 1120

My son is putting his schedule together for Fall and has the choice of having 3 50-minute calculus lectures (3 days) or two 75-minute lectures (2 days). Does anyone who has already taken this class have a strong preference? The 2-day schedule "fits" his schedule better, but we are wondering if it is much more intensive. Any thoughts?

It’s really personal preference. You end up with the same amount of class time. It’s easier to focus for 3x 50 minutes than 2x 75 minutes for most people and the more frequent classes means you’re probably intellectually engaged with the subject more frequently. That said, everyone has to take their fair share of 75 minute lectures and learn to focus for the extra 25 minutes. On the flip side, if you miss class, missing a 75 minute lecture is worse.

It is in no way more intensive. If the 2-day fits his schedule better I would go for it. Though I would stress he should also study the material in the middle day. A common thing that people is do is go to class Tuesday and then don’t even look at the subject till they are in class on Thursday. For instance, if it’s TR schedule, he should devote at least an hour on Wednesday for the subject. It is usually easier to fall behind on a 2-day / wk class than a 3-day one.
