Look, I was stating for this for the purpose of a CALS applicant who was non-Dyson (as most are). While the 5% Stanford to 13% Cornell may not be all that different, a 5% vs ~20% CALS certainly is. You have close to quadruple the chance of acceptence, depending on small and largely inconsequential differences in the applicant pool, year to year discrepancies, etc.
@dryorange, to answer your questions about CALS acceptances from NY Vs. OOS - my guidance counselor here in NJ who has a major amount of experience with Cornell, say she thinks that being from NY, especially when applying to CALS in incredibly helpful. I hope she is wrong since I am not from NY!
Are CALS applicants selected based on their majors?
She isn’t entirely wrong in regards to Cals having some preference for instate NY students. Remember, Cals is a land grant school within Cornell. Because of its unique origin as a State sponsored agricultural school it’s always behaved similarity to other large State universities in terms of instate admissions preferences. That’s why when you see that Cals has a relatively higher acceptance rate versus the other Cornell Colleges I would caution that it is higher because of its unique position as a contract school. With that said, don’t be discouraged if you are not an instate applicant. Cornell is still ultimately a tier 1 private university that looks for the best and brightest, like its peer institutions, regardless of where they come from. If your stats and “fit” make sense you will be accepted. Hang in there.
Does anybody have any data in regards to specific numbers for percentages for instate vs OOS applicants?
@realperson2990, I couldn’t find any official statistics published by Cornell regarding the details of CALS admissions.
I have no chance of getting in, but still applied. Stats are not up to par and do not live in NY. Still quite interested and have many EC’s that relate. Thought I would take a long long shot. Did love the school and loved the CALS program when I visited. Would love to be there, but not likely. Oh well… not the worst thing that could happen in the world. Would love to go, but not the end of time if I don’t.
Honestly there’s no point in speculating or thinking about your chances or whatever anymore. There’s literally 4 days left. We’re at the final stretch so just relax and wait for Thursday. It’s easier said than done but thinking about it and trying to calculate your chances is just going to drive you insane. This is @ everyone
If applications were free, and everyone used the exact same application, then all students would apply to every school and acceptance rates would be just proportional to school size: Bigger schools would have higher acceptance rates. This is somewhat true now with the common application.
Acceptance rate alone does not put a school in a different league.
@fibrocartilage9 I agree with your philosophy but why Thursday? I thought the notification date was Friday?
Lol ivy decision day is march 30th, which is this Thursday @Scholar1917
Huh, I well I guess that’s one less day of waiting. Dang I’m nervous
yeah I agree with @fibrocartilage9 there’s really no way to tell who’s gonna be accepted or not. I’ve seen people with amazing stats get rejected from Cornell and people with sub par stats get accepted. It all really depends on whether or not cornell thinks youre a good fit, so in the end we’ll just have to wait and see what happens. don’t lose hope and think you’re not gonna get in because your stats aren’t the best, none of us really know what’s gonna happen. Cornell isn’t only filled with people who are top of their class and have almost perfect SAT scores, so don’t worry guys. You’ll be fine wherever you end up!!
Oh my gosh! I am so excited/nervous for Thursday! I just decided to join this thread instead of lurking (: Do you know what time decisions will be released? I applied to CALS, but I’m an OOS student…
March 30 at 5 PM Eastern
Thanks @pacbac that’s helpful (: Did you apply to CALS too?
@KaleSeed what major in CALS did you apply to? I applied for biological sciences.
I applied to enviro eng at cals. Im sure its a competitive major
i applied to human bio, health, and society in human ecology, but i’m oos. are my chances close to none? i made sure to really talk about why i’d be a good fit in my essay…
I applied Ag sciences, anybody else out there?
