Cornell’s letter explains that the Early Engineering Scholars Program (ESSP) is designed to help with adjustment to the rigors of engineering. Thing is, I think my D’s resume says she is prepared for the rigors of engineering. I hope the program offers usable credit and not remedial math and a rehash of AP computer science.
Her letter doesn’t say which program she need to be, only the programs is for 8 weeks she have to miss the last 2 weeks of school and back and forth for graduation. We are really disappointed. We love Cornell but I believed she is thinking hard now.
The program runs from June 21 to August 9 and I suppose move in is a few days before the start. The upside is that from the reviews I’ve seen most participants enjoyed the program even if they weren’t thrilled to be required to go in the first place.
We just got the package good luck with everything
Just a plug for Cornell Days…if you can go, do so! They do a fantastic job. My D is on the committee for Cornell Days and all of the ambassadors do a terrific job with this event.
@abc2021 hey there, current freshman at cornell here. not being part of a sorority or fraternity is definitely not considered abnormal since most students aren’t. that being said, you will hear a lot about greek life especially second semester of freshman year because that’s when rush is and probably when a lot of people you know will be rushing. i’d say it’s pretty present on campus in the sense that you will know a lot of people involved in greek life, but if you have no interest in it (like me) it doesn’t overpower the atmosphere and there are many, many people who aren’t in sororities or frats.
Has anyone who had a FA document issue to resolve received their FA package?
I recently talked to a Cornell '18 grad who said that the first year you would like likely “be so busy you don’t think you’ll have time for anything besides studying eating and sleeping” . Any alums care to comment, as far as if this is hyperbole or not?
@TiggyB62, I am so glad to hear that and am hoping that there are ways at these days that parents can learn about the school too - especially the CALS school.
Realperson2990 - it depends on your major. For architecture and engineering, that is probably true. For other majors, no. My daughter is a junior in DSoc and while she works hard, she has never been overwhelmed academically.
Note - this would be true for architecture and engineering students at ANY university.
I wonder what explains the admission of significantly fewer students from a larger application pool this year.
probably an unexpectedly high yield last year!
Urgent- really need your input here PLEASE-
To be accepted by SHA next year, which two of the following courses should I select for Senior year of high school?
I like to pick the first two but am afraid this choice will hurt my application.
AP European History
Physics-Honors
AP Physics I
AP Statistics
Please advise… PLEASE!!!
so can the low acceptance rate mean that people will be admitted off the waitlist?
@idekidc They can, but I mean the chances are probably low, as with other institutions with waitlists.
@jjsnow There is no magical formula for classes to take. Some people take like 20 APs, others like 5. As long as you are challenging yourself with a rigorous load, have a high test score, and can write proficiently about your HS experience you’ll be fine.
In my opinion, all of the courses you listed are equally rigorous, except AP Phys 1 is probably harder than the honors version. I have taken the calculus-based Physics C, and I am pretty sure that Phys 1 is the algebra version of it.
Please don’t take an AP Physics course for the sake of colleges. I have a few friends that did it for that reason… and they are not faring too well in class or college admissions. At this point, you should just chill out tbh. Get a part-time job, start researching schools and their testing requirements (prep as necessary), and go have fun lol.
If you are interested in SHA perhaps European History would be a good choice and also Statistics. @JJsnow
Don’t try to plan too much @JJsnow . Take a rigorous course load that interests you and meets the basic Cornell requirements. Senior year, I overbooked things with 4 very challenging AP courses and 2 college preparatory classes. Ive been largely watching senior year fly by because of my miserable course load. Its not worth it, as long as you’ve done fine up to this point, don’t burn yourself out in your final year.
Is there a groupme for accepted students? I want to make friends as soon as possible, since it is difficult for me to lol. I already followed the Cornell Class of 2021 Instagram.
Did anyone get the free Cornell t-shirt by mail ?
