cornell v duke

to ivy or not to ivy...
i love em both, but unfortunately i have to pick one. chem major, liberal, non-conformist, athiest, want to be surrounded by smart people. any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Both awesome schools...Cornell is Ivy...go Cornell.

Cornell all the way....

Many people don't know that Duke is an EXCELLENT school. It has GREAT educational opportunities and a beautiful campus. Social life is definitely better over there... i mean duke's bball team... it OWNS.

really your decision shouldn't be whether to ivy or not to ivy. Remember that the ivy league is a FOOTBALL LEAGUE. There are many schools that trump the ivies in certain categories. go with the one that you'd like to go to. i still think ithaca isn't a good place for a university

hmm i would have chosen Duke over Cornell (but I got waitlisted at Duke), so that's a moot point

It's a tough choice. Some things to think about:
Duke has a nice campus, but outside of it, Durham is not a very good area.
Cornell has a beautiful campus, but it is very remote.
You will be surrounded by smart people whichever school you choose.
Social life at Duke may be more prevalent.

chem major? sciences? cornell hands down

"Many people don't know that Duke is an EXCELLENT school"

hence why Cornell may be a better choice! I grew up in the Northeast and until looking at admissions info and rankings, I always thought that duke was similar in reputation to UNC.

Schools are pretty equal.

Yes, the Ivy League started out as a football league, but clearly its significance has changed. The Ivy League is synonymous with excellence, everyone knows that.

J.J. Redick cried after Duke bball lost lol.

i applied to both, got rejected from duke waitlisted cornell.... i would have gone to duke if i had the choice, for a number of reasons, but it varies for the individual... for me, the nice weather all year, DUKE BBALL, the awsome and friendly atmosphere, and the laid back academics make duke sweeeet

i got into cornell and rejected by duke.. but i liked duke a lot more just because of the weather and the not as competitive atmosphere.. and of course the sports at duke. but c'mon... duke has been getting some bad publicity lately and durham is NOT a good area. the whole reason i didn't apply ED to duke was bc of safety reasons .. and now look at the whole lacrosse scandal and also on the front pg of their website it said something about a student getting robbed. before i saw my decision i was kinda like hmm.. safety is def an issue. but at the same time, some kid got stabbed at cornell about a month ago.. so idk. but now i'm totally for CORNELL bc it accepted me! YAY CORNELL :D

thank you for all off your input. i have a hard choice ahead of me but i am currently leaning towards cornell. thank you once again.

Now now, Cornell is perfectly safe! Let's remember that the Cornell student in question was the stabber not the stabbee and that the student stabbed a student from another college.

I don't understand why varsity sport would matter so much unless you're actually gonna play in the team. Really, how does it affect your college life personally that Duke has a famous basketball team?

i'm a hockey fan... so i would choose cornell over duke haha... but theyre both great schools

id choose duke over cornell simply becaus eit isnt too far from my house. im in FL. but i got rejected from duke...so cornell it is.

Im sorry, but my bro goes to Cornell and hates it (he likes cities, i suppose) he really wanted to transfer to Duke...

I chose Cornell (Arts & Sciences) over Duke myself, didn't regret it.

metags, what was ur reason just curious?

Visited both schools, got a better vibe at Cornell. Liked the diversity of course offerings at the various colleges within Cornell (wine tasting, yeah!) and the cold weather too, seriously. I had lived in tropical weather all my life before that. My older brother was actually attending grad school at Duke, but that wasn't a factor either way.
