for someone who is considering doing a pre-med related major, has half ride to NYU, financial circumstances may be a factor for cornell, but really wants ivy league. which option would be better? also, which school is better for "pre-med"?

Both schools are great for premeds. In terms of opportunities, you may have more at NYU. The only reason is because NYU is in the city. Plenty of places to volunteer or do medical related stuff. I'm sure Cornell has stuff too, but I wouldn't know since I don't go there.

The name Cornell has more prestige in it and you can certainly get one heck of an undergrad education there. I personally think NYU is overrated in some aspects. Furthermore, they overcharge the tuition. As a current student at NYU CAS, I can say that we are not the cream of the crop. Stern and Tisch gets the best of everything.

One other thing to consider, the academic opportunities at NYU are rather bland. In CAS, the list of possible majors are generic and boring. Cornell has one of the best selections (especially, Cornell CAS)

I'd a transfer applicant for Cornell (Human Eco)...hope to hear soon.

But if I could choose, I'd pick Cornell after my personal experience at NYU.

89% of cornell graduates applying for med school get in if they have a 3.4+ gpa

78% get in period, regardless of gpa

the national average is just 50%

cornell has a graduate medical school in NYC

You're definitely going to have limited clinical volunteer opportunities at Cornell. There's only one medical center around and there is a long waiting list. However, personally, I don't think that's a big deal. There are plenty of other places to volunteer at and at worst, you can just volunteer at a hospital during the summer. The key is the numerous research opportunities at Cornell. Personally, I would rather do research than volunteer while at Cornell since I can volunteer anywhere.

In terms of academics, Cornell's acceptance rates speak for themselves.

Great points. Exactly why I would love to attend Cornell next fall =)
