Cornell >> WUSTL.

I thought WashU was a community college and conveniently “forgot” to apply there despite the urging of my guidance counselor.

WashU St. Louis >> Cornell

WashU: More beautiful campus, happier students, academics slightly better or on par with Cornell

In my humble opinion.

muchoschocolate, can you please explain the following:

1) More beautiful campus: I have visited both campuses and found Cornell’s more beautiful than WUSTL’s.

2) Happier students: Isn’t this impossible to actually measure? Students I knew at Cornell were definitely having the time of their lives.

For those two points, I understand that you are merely point out your personal opinion, and yours is as valid as anybody’s.

However, academic quality is quantifiable and Cornell beats WUSTL in virtually every measure. The only disciplines where WUSTL has a slight edge over Cornell are Biology, Political Science and Psychology. In all three cases, the difference is negligible. In virtually every other academic discipline, Cornell is significantly better than WUSTL. Don’t get me wrong, WUSTL is an elite academic instutition, but Cornell is an academic giant, a powerhouse, even when compared to other elites.

Cornell’s Architecture, Business and Engineering programs are also significantly stronger than WUSTL’s.

^^^^Sounds like both Cornell and Michigan have it over WUSTL academically.

Why? He/she said it was “in my humble opinion”.

Given the typical WUStL bashing on CC and the competition to see who can use the most “>” symbols on this thread, I’d say you have your answer.

Cornell gets grief only because, for whatever reason, it’s viewed as the least selective and somehow the “worst” of the Ivies.

WUStL, on the other hand, gets grief because it has the nerve to reject top students and attempt to better itself. (I know, right? Who does it think it is?) It also gets bashed because it does well in the US News rankings, and insecure students and people overly dependent on rankings resent this.

Good job. Have a [gold star](http://msp199.■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■/albums/aa250/TanDan_Photos/gold_star.jpg).

^ Berkeley too. Can I get a gold star too? :D

“WUStL, on the other hand, gets grief because it has the nerve to reject top students and attempt to better itself.”

A school that takes pride in rejecting top students, or that thinks it is bettering itself in doing so, is seriously and sadly misguided.

Lord, aside from Poli Sci looks like Wisconsin is a better school than Wash U.

Every university takes pride in rejecting lots of applicants, and from their perspective, the more quality applicants they can afford to reject, the more selective/prestigious they are. It’s one reason why colleges brag about how many valedictorians they reject.

The University of Pennsylvania turned away 394 of the 1,045 valedictorians that applied. Also, about 70% of applicants who got near-perfect scores in the math and critical-reading sections of the SAT were turned away, says Mr. Stetson.

Are you suggesting colleges don’t benefit from selectivity?

Now you’re catching on!

Just look at their rankings at USNWR for your answer. It behooves schools like WUSTL to reject top applicants.
