I saw a similar thread on the Rice forum and thought it might be helpful. What schools are/have you turned down for WashU?

It would also be interesting to test WashU's notoriety for "Tufts syndrome" rejections by asking what schools admitted you if WashU rejected or wait listed you.

I'm turning down Cornell University, Johns Hopkins, Rice University, University of Michigan - Ann Arbor, Purdue University, University of Utah (full tuition+paid research), and Boise State University (full tuition+stipend). I have to admit it was difficult deciding between U of U and WUSTL though. A half-tuition scholarship only goes so far with a 50K school.

S4 is turning down Princeton, Cornell University, CMU and UMich Ann Arbor. He was wait listed at MIT. Second S to go to Wash U.

Turning down Columbia, Brown, UMichigan - Ann Arbor, Ohio State, John Hopkins. I <3 WUstl!

Duke, Johns Hopkins, UNC, Georgia Tech, and a bunch of others.

How many of those of you who replied are going to WashU over those mentioned schools because of financial aid? Could you guys specify your reason(s) for turning down those schools?

^My decision had absolutely nothing to do with financial aid.

turning down Notre Dame, U of I, Tulane, Swarthmore, U of Minnesota, Howard, Hampton, && others.
My decision had nothing to do with financial aid either.

Nothing to do with financial aid? Who is going to WUSTL in lieu of others and paying the 48K+ per year?

@tmi- I'm only getting 2k from WashU and am turning down much better scholarships for it. Why does it seem so surprising to you that someone would do that for WUSTL?

Haha guys, seriously, chill out. WashU gives out a lot of merit scholarships and is really generous with financial aid, and for a lot of people financial aid is a pretty big factor in deciding, so that's why I and tmi were wondering. I'm just curious; if not financial aid, what tipped you over to WashU?

However, with that being said, there's nothing wrong with going to a school regardless of financial aid. WashU is a great school :)

My D is currently a freshman at WashU. She turned down MANY four year free rides to attend WashU (where she receives just 2K a year for NMF + RC Byrd scholarship). She also turned down Notre Dame (who offered no money). WashU offered what she was looking for in a school and it has lived up to that promise. On the way home from the airport at the holiday break I asked her if she thought she had made the right decision choosing WashU and she said, "It was SUCH the right decision".

The school is VERY challenging. D and I sort of have a running joke. When she has been beaten down by another unbelievably hard science test, I always ask, "Is that place beating you up too bad? Do you want to leave and go to ____(stateU) for free?".
Now when she e-mails and is having a bad day (everyone has them!), the last line is always, "And NO I don't want to go to __(stateU), thank you very much!" I love it!

WashU is definitely a great school. Any one pick WashU over Ivy league school with no money offered from either?

Yes, my S did. Stop acting so shocked.

Yeah, it's really not that big of a deal. The only thing WashU lacks is recognition among the common people, and that really shouldn't affect your decision.

Hey I said Wash U is a great school, plus St. Louis is a very nice city. Not shocked, just curious!

That was my only concern about the school. Then I got over it because I realized how much I love it to death (amazing research, great campus, not cutthroat, great city, art school, gymnastics, and a million other things).

D chose Wash U (no scholarships/fin aid) over Carnegie Mellon, U-Mich, U-Wisc-Mad, full-tuition 4 yr. scholarship at U-Minn-TC, 24K/yr at Tulane, U-Del and several others with merit scholarships. It really seemed to be the "perfect" school for her for so many reasons; no other schools came close in her case.

hopkins, maryland, rice, swarthmore

=D =D =D sooo excited!!! but sooo much debt =(
