Would many of you consider Cornell better than UC Berkeley, UCLA, Carnegie Mellon, and Johns Hopkins?

Is Cornell comparable to HYPSMC? Cornell just doesn't have that "household name" appeal to me...

Any thoughts?

Any thoughts?

"Cornell better than UC Berkeley, UCLA, Carnegie Mellon, and Johns Hopkins?"

yes.

"is cornell comparable to HYPSMC?"

of course, its an ivy league with amazing colleges. harvard, though well respected, doesnt have as good individual programs as cornell does (like engineering, arch., business<hotel>) and all of the classes are taught by foreign TAs who dont know english because the pompous professors are off doing their own thing.</hotel>

To the OP...Congratulations on your ED acceptance.

Are you having a bit of "buyers remorse"? It's not uncommon for people in your (enviable) position to experience. You had to make your choice so early in the school year. Consider the poster "Beefs" who after gaining acceptance into University of Chicago (non-binding EA) he wanted to withdraw his Early application to Cornell to leave his options open.

As to your original question... Cornell has "household appeal!" I'm not going to slam other schools to make you feel better about Cornell. I think you must know that Cornell is an amazing school and you are so fortunate to have the opportunity to attend.

speaking of "Beefs", I wonder what happened? Did he get into Cornell? Was he able to withdraw?

Better in what respects? UCLA and Berkeley probably have better weather. Berkeley has more internatinal prestige. JHU has smaller classes probably. The UC's are much cheaper.

If you're talking about general name recognition, then probably. But, in the long run, name recognition means little.

I do not think Berkely has more international prestige. Most people in Far East would send their kids to Cornell over Berkeley, Dartmouth, Brown, Duke or Penn. The reason is that many political leaders in Asia went to Cornell. Asia is the biggest growth area right now.

My daughter had a choice of Duke or Cornell. I told her to go to Cornell if she wants to work in Asia later.

Cornell doesn't have household name appeal? lmao

Depends on the major. In general, being an Ivy, it's obviously second to none. But when it comes to things like engineering, CS, etc., schools like MIT, CMU, Stanford, and UC Berkeley are definitely better.

Berkeley definitely has more international prestige in Asia than Cornell, except in Thailand.

They are all great schools and you can't go wrong going to any of them depending on what you want in a school and what you want to study. Berkeley, UCLA and Stanford all have great weather, but UCLA and Berkeley are huge schools and it is somewhat easy for undergrads to get lost in the shuffle. Stanford has a strong reputation for science and engineering but you don't hear that much about some of their humanities programs. CMU is one of the top engineering and CS schools and so is MIT, but I would also say CMU is not so strong in social sciences and some humanities. My son's other top choice was CMU but after spending a summer there he felt that Cornell was more well rounded in its academic programs and in its students.

There is a site where students rate their schools. Cornell was rated B+(many A, A- in various categories) by its students, whereas Stanford and Berkely had a B average. I read some of those reviews, especially Cornell's, and I think they were on the money.

My daughter is at Cornell. Coming from a very competitive private school, she still finds Cornell's classes very challenging. What she loves about Cornell is the social life. She has spoken/visited many of her friends at other colleges. She said that they don't have as much fun as Cornell students.

My brother is an expate in HKG and he said Cornell network is great. He just went to a Hedge Fund conference sponsored by Cornell.

In Japan Cornell is more well-known than Berkeley, at least in my experience. Not sure about other parts of Asia.

Cornell is a great university but i think johns hopkins is comparable. obviously, i prefered cornell...i applied there early. my preference was based moreso on a love of the cornell atmosphere than based on "superior academics."

lol My post wasn't to start a debate about international name recognition but simply to clarify the meaning of the word "better." I suspect the OP meant name recogntion and prestige as that seems to be the typical CC mentality.

These questions tend to be silly when comparing well-known, highly-respected schools (i.e., those mentioned above). For those in a position to hire college graduates into meaningful jobs and those in graduate school admissions, all of the schools mentioned are held in high regard. This is the population to be concerned with -- not the "household" recognition.

I think I should be satisfied with Cornell... but I keep on thinking otherwise...

Cornell University is a great school. Depending upon your major area of study, it is superior to even HYPS. Of course, even students at HYPS transfer out to other schools. Cornell is not for everyone, but neither is Harvard.

Cornell is an absolutely amazing school and you can literally go to any graduate college, get any job, or go to anywhere in the world and succeed if you do well there and have the motivation. Now that's power...

Just think about how much you wanted to go to Cornell when u applied. This is a human experience that when you achieve something you start saying "well...what if...?". It's pretty ridiculous when you stop and think about it...I mean Cornell is a DREAM school for many people in the world and you got in. If you go in ready to achieve your goals you can make your dreams come true without ever looking back...and what could be better than that?

ps it's completely true about the outlook. If you go in there unhappy you won't be happy...period. Don't you dare do that to urself because you deserve much more than being sad...ur going to CORNELL and you can have the time of your life...so have it!

It looks like the OP has been afflicted with bball syndrome. Seek treatment immediately.

hahahahahahhaha omg that's what i thought of! Hopefully no1 out that is like bball tho...
