COSMOS 2019

Any input on the UCSC cluster 1 (Number theory and Discrete Math cluster) , is it interesting for a rising senior??

@phaseshift thanks!

@cloudslicer

My D got into UCSD cluster #8 Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine. She is so surprised and grateful. Stats are below:

GPA: 4.0 unweighted
APs: 10th grade: Chem, Comp Sci, 11th grade: Bio, Calc AB, Stats, Eng Lit

EC: 4 years of speech, 6 years of FTC robotics, 4 years as team captain and 1 year as software captain, president of her schoolā€™s HOSA, HomeEd and Coding club, FBLA national contestant, founder of her schoolā€™s 3D printing program.

Essays: She thinks this is what sets her apart. She spent a lot of time on her essays. She talked about her all her ECs and most importantly she connected her love for 3D printing where she worked with printing prosthetic hands for amputee children with her desire to learn about tissue engineering and regenerative medicine(cluster 8 theme).

She also applied the year before in 10th grade and was rejected, but this year she tried again and was accepted.

So advice to incoming applicants is donā€™t give up, show passion for what you learn and give it your best.

@6565656

I believe aid is need based, have your parents already turned in their tax information? If you really canā€™t afford it and wanted to go, I would call Cosmos and explain the situation to them. Good luck!

@marvelousmarvel Iā€™d join if one was made :smiley: but on what platform?

@applesauce4716 I think we have to become Junior Members before we can Private Message

@momincal Congrats to your D.
Can you please let me know how to fill in all the ECs in the application ? I remember were only 2 boxes for academic activities in the application form. My child (9th grader) left out quite a few ECs from the application due to this.

@flgiants Hi, Iā€™m not momincal, but I also had quite a bit of ECs and I got accepted to UC Davis Cluster 4. I just put my two most important ones in the two spots for academic activities and tried to tie in the others in the essays.

@astronomy21 Thanks a lot for the reply. My child put two of his most important activities and his essay was tied to one of them since that was his area of passion as well. May be he can strategize his essay to highlight more ECs next time. Will give him this feedback.

This was his first time filling an application with essays and still learning!

@flgiants Youā€™re welcome! However, if he has one specific extracurricular activity that has given him a lot of experience or has really fed his passion for something, other ECs may not be as important to stress. Because there is a relatively low word count for COSMOS, figuring out a straightforward message that you want to convey is really important.

@watislifedepression Go for UCLA, because many people go to COSMOS but going to UCLA is rare. Plus you can save money and give others a chance to go to COSMOS. AND you can apply again next year at COSMOS.

@GoBears2023 Hi! I got waitlisted for UCI clusters #1 and #6, and I was wondering what you mean by having hope. I was informed that the latest to get off the waitlist was April 12. Is it possible to still get notified after that? I know you said mid-June, but they stated that it would be no later than April 12. If you could elaborate and possibly tell me my chances that would be great!

Anyone else get into cluster 4 @ UCD, or UCD in general?

@taiwanbest I know a lot of people (myself included) applied to two or more summer programs, so getting off the waitlist isnā€™t a long shot. I think they said april 12 because that is when the first and second waves of admitted students have to respond by.

Anyone waitlisted for UCI cluster #1 or #6?

@applesauce4716 You only have 3 more posts to go before you become a Junior Member! You got this!

@marvelousmarvel Yeah Iā€™m also waiting for other programs like sip and stanford internship. Even if I donā€™t get into COSMOS Iā€™ll probably focus on some cool coding project. Thanks for letting me know!

@astronomy21 haha thanks!

just curious, but are there usually more juniors or sophomores at cosmos?

@cloverin From past yearsā€™ data, it looks like there are more juniors (but not by much- 44% juniors to 38% sophomores, with a few freshmen and 8th graders thrown in). Idk if thatā€™s outdated now though.

Does anybody know if thereā€™s a group chat going for UCI clusters yet?
